RONAN — The voters of Ronan were evenly torn between city council candidates Roger Romero and Tracy Morigeau Frank in the Nov. 5 election but the city council charged with breaking the tie voted almost unanimously in favor of incumbent Romero at its Nov. 18 meeting.

Councilmembers Chris Adler, Marlene Melton, Ellen Kaphammer and Cal Hardy voted for Romero, who abstained from the vote. Councilmember Robert McCrea was not present.

The council thanked Morigeau Frank for her interest in city government and said that the council would likely call and ask her to serve on a town committee. Adler said she should keep coming to council meetings.

The time and dates of meetings are not clear, Morigeau Frank responded. Online, the meetings are listed as a time different than the council actually holds. City Clerk Kaylene Melton said the city did not have a website, and she was not familiar with a website that posts the dates. She said the dates are always posted on the door of town hall before the meeting.

“Sometimes I don’t make it down Main Street,” Morigeau Frank said.

Melton said she might put notices of meetings in the calendar sections of local newspapers.

In other business:

• Mark Nelson, chairman of the park board, said the group has raised $17,500 and recently received a commitment from Walmart for $12,000. The park board is in the process of writing grants for park projects, Nelson said.

• Rosa Tougas, member of the Ronan Library Board, informed council that the library was exploring loan options with a bank. The board will have a better idea of what is and is not available after the city agrees to a lease agreement, Tougas said.

• Melton said the city would need to have a public hearing to set rates for public records.

• Police Chief Valent Maxwell said he was reviewing the department’s policies and procedures manual. He said the application period for an additional officer would close on Nov. 22. Maxwell said the department continued to have radio problems, but he want to see if the problems were fixable before spending money on new equipment.
