Duane Matthew Fettig

ST. IGNATIUS — Duane Fettig, 67, of St. Ignatius, passed away Nov. 24, 2013, at his home in St. Ignatius. He was born Aug. 26, 1946, to Sebastian and Ann Fettig in Dickinson, N.D. and raised in Richardton, N.D. After graduating high school in 1965, he enlisted in the US Navy. Upon discharge in 1970, Duane attended college and received a Bachelor of Arts in business management. Following his college graduation, he started a business of his own as a drywall finisher and painter. Duane was extremely skillful with his work and traveled all over to complete jobs. He continued in this career until 2010 at which time he retired.

In 1994, Duane moved to Seattle, Wash. where he met the love of his life and business partner, Mari Ulmer. They relocated to Montana and in 1997 settled in St. Ignatius to raise their daughter Nicole. During his years in Montana, Duane made many great friends. He loved to cook his famous ribs for them. Duane and Mari spent many days driving in the mountains and enjoying the great outdoors. His family was very important to him and when at home he loved to relax to music or quietly enjoy a good book.

His father Sebastian and his mother Ann preceded Duane in death. He is survived by his loving partner of 20 years, Mari Ulmer, and her daughter Nicole Callahan; his eldest sons Sean (Carol) and Paul (Louise) all of Aberdeen, Scotland; his sons Dolph and David of South Dakota; his siblings Ray (Virginia) of Richardton, N.D., Patricia (George) of St. Paul, Minn., Darlene (Don) Portschellar of Jonesboro, Ga., Marianne (Tom) Voegele of Richardton, N.D., and Melinda (Dave) Andrews of Seattle, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at 3 p.m., at Foster Funeral Home in St. Ignatius where the Mission Valley Honor Guard, friends and family will celebrate Duane’s life.

In lieu of flowers, condolences and contributions to the Duane Fettig Memorial Fund can be mailed to P.O. Box 661, St. Ignatius, MT, 59855 or brought to Silver Dollar Bar in St. Ignatius.
