Early Exit: Charlo boys’ and girls’ season ends during trip to Western C championship

BUTTE – A pair of losses gave the Charlo boys an unexpected early exit to a successful season this weekend as the sixth-ranked team traveled to Butte for the Western C tournament. The team first fell to Shields Valley, 52-46, and saw its hopes of advancing in the tournament ended with a 67-50 loss to Ennis.

The Vikings fell to 17-5 to end the season.

Charlo started the game off strong against Shields Valley, leading 17-13 after the first quarter. They continued to lead through the second frame, as the game was in favor of the Vikings at the half 26-19.

The Rebels rallied in the third frame, outscoring the Vikings 20-8 to take a 39-34 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Vikings just couldn’t seem to regain poise to put Shields Valley away as the Rebels outscored Charlo 13-12 in the final frame to pick up a 52-46 win.

The Vikings then faced off against Ennis in a consolation game, where the Mustangs proved to be too much for the Vikings during the fourth frame, easily beating Charlo 67-50.

During the first quarter of play, Blake McKitrick helped Ennis go up 18-12 as he hit all three of his 3-pointers. The Vikings continued to struggle during the second quarter, with Ennis outscoring them 21-19, to build a 39-31 halftime lead.

The Vikings rallied in the third quarter, putting up 17 points to Ennis’ seven to take a 48-46 point lead into the final eight minutes of play. It was during the fourth quarter that Ennis put together a second 21-point quarter push to win decisively 67-60.

The Lady Vikings also headed to Butte to battle for the Class C Western Championship, winning one of three games, finishing the season with a 19-4 record.

The top seeded Charlo girls’ advanced to the semifinals by starting off strong with a big win over Shields Valley 38-26.

The team began the game with a strong push in the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Rebels 14-4 during the first frame. Deondra Brown put up a pair of three pointers during a 13-0 run during the second quarter to help pull away for the remainder of the game.

The Lady Vikings continued to put the pressure on defensively, preventing the Lady Rebels from finding the rim. The team sat at halftime with a comfortable lead of 25-10.

During the second half of play, Charlo continued to roll, finishing the game with a 38-26 victory.

Kinley Pope led her team with 12 points while Brown added 10 in the victory.

Addie Ferguson and Toree Ferguson both scored nine points to lead the Lady Rebels.

Heading into semifinal play, the Lady Vikings were cursed by a slow first half to give the Mustangs of Ennis a 10 point win, with a final score of 46-36.

Ennis came out with a bang during the first frame, outscoring Charlo 18-5 in the first eight minutes of play during the semifinal match. Charlo attempted to cut into the Mustang’s lead during the second quarter, outscoring the Ennis 7-4, to cut the Mustang lead to 22-12 at the half.

Both teams’ matched each other during the third quarter with both scoring eight points. The score was 30-20 heading into the fourth frame. Chalro needed to act quickly if they were going to turn things around, as the game was quickly slipping away.

The Mustangs wouldn’t let their 10-point lead slip away during the final quarter as Ennis held on and earned third place in the tournament with a 46-36 win.

Dawn Blevins led her team with nine points, Kinley Pope put up seven, while Rachel Hoyt added six.

Mikayla Sullivan scored a game high 13 points for the Mustangs while Megan Barney put up 10.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings moved on to a consolation game against Twin Bridges. Poor shooting from the floor and free throw line crippled the Lady Vikings as their season ended with a 57-30 loss against the Falcons.

Twin Bridges jumped out to an early lead during the first frame as the Falcons almost doubled Charlo's point output, 13-7. Charlo struggled offensively throughout the first half, only shooting 18 percent from the floor.

At the half, the Lady Vikings found themselves with a large deficit to overcome, down 28-14.
The game continued in the favor of the Falcons as Twin Bridges continued to put points on the board. Twin Bridges outscored the Lady Vikings 11-6 during the third frame, and continued to roll as the top seeded Lady Vikings ended their season earlier than expected with the 57-30 loss.

Dawn Blevins led her team with seven points, while both Deondra Brown and Jordan Ludeman both contributed six points.

Peyton Ferris led all scorers for the game, putting up 22 points for the Falcons. Haylee Lammi added eight points, while Taylor Sewell scored six.
