For the past couple of years the Ronan cross country team has been camping at the Big Arm State Park before their season starts, they did the same this year, just with a little twist – they had to run 100 miles to get there.

But with a little teamwork even a daunting task like running 100 miles isn’t such a big deal. The 23 members of the Ronan cross country team took turns running three-mile legs, with each member at least having to run two legs.

The century run got off to an ominous start the evening of Aug. 19th. As Ronan coach Gale Decker said a prayer in the Charlo High School parking lot, pitch-black rain clouds filled the skies with the crash of thunder occasionally ringing out from them.

After the full team ran the first mile through Charlo, Kevin Wroblewski ran the first three-mile leg in a complete downpour. The rain lessened and by the time Halley Walston and Kiona Howell ran the third leg a rainbow spanned the sky outside Moiese, a promissory note for the better weather ahead.

“It turned out to be a beautiful night. It was warm and the moon was almost full,” Decker said.

The team left Charlo a little after 7 p.m. and reached the park by 9 a.m. the next morning, two hours earlier than Decker expected.

The Ronan cross country season will get underway Friday, as they host the Canal Bank Run at 1 p.m. The three-mile run starts about a quarter mile east on the canal feeder row near Canyon Mill road.
