When Community Bank celebrated its centennial this year, it brought back a forgotten, but excellent tradition — the family-friendly, beloved block party.

Reminiscent of days filled with hide-and-seek, music, barbecue and baseball games lit by the fading summer sun, the summer block party is an artifact of the 1960s, but could add some needed community spirit to neighborhoods all over the country today, especially in Lake County.

In a state such as Montana, where the weather only allows outdoor activities comfortably for a few months, neighborhoods would benefit from social events that introduce them to their neighbors — making the summers friendlier and the winters a bit warmer with new friends living right next door.

If a simple block party doesn’t entice your neighborhood, try to spice up the idea with a few great summer party ideas.

1. Walk-up movie theater — Why not transform your back yard into an outdoor movie theater, resembling the drive-in theaters of yore? Everyone under 40 will be amazed at watching a movie outside in fresh air. Get out those old speakers, a laptop, a projector, a white king-sized sheet and enjoy a movie under the stars.

Price-wise, a projector can run pretty steep. So, unless you have the funds, ask around. Maybe a neighbor has one sitting in the garage.

2. Culture fest — Lake County is in the unique position to be the home of several different cultural groups. Why not invite the neighbors to a night of sampling different foods? Ask your Native American neighbors to bring Indian tacos and the Scandinavians next door to bring Swedish meatballs.

If anyone plays traditional instruments or performs dances, set up a small stage on a porch and let the neighbors perform and teach mini-lessons. This event would help children and adults learn about their neighbors next door and across the ocean.

3. Beach party — For a day party, gather up a few baby pools, beach toys, a volleyball net and don’t forget the Beach Boys and sunscreen. Let the beach fun begin for adults and children alike.

4. Softball party — A little friendly competition can be healthy for a community. Divide the block into two teams. Think north side versus the south side or the east side versus the west, and have yourselves a friendly game of America’s favorite pastime.

This party could be held at a local park or field, and don’t forget the barbecue, apple pie and lemonade afterward.

5. Karaoke party — Let all those future American Idol singers get their start in your back yard. Kids can rock out to the latest pop hits while parents can celebrate with those unforgettable oldies. A judging committee can even vote on the hottest artist. Create a makeshift stage and light up the night with some tiki torches and citronella candles.

And remember, your neighbors won’t mind the noise because they’ll all be in your backyard.
