POLSON — The School District #23 Board of Trustees suspended the Family and Consumer Sciences program at Polson High School at their Aug. 9 meeting.

Board Chair Theresa Taylor said the district had posted a job opening for a FCS teacher two times and had no completed applications.

Trustee Kelly Bagnell said she would like to see the program suspended for only one year and then revisited.

The program suspension will impact one student who holds a district office in a FCS co-curricular group as well as 35 students who have signed up for FCS classes in the fall according to Superintendent David Whitesell. Whitesell had been advised to approach Mission School District and see if the PHS student could be absorbed into the Mission FCS group.

In other business, the board also approved the 2010-2011 Polson School District budget.

Whitesell presented information on a plan for the Building Trades class to renovate the four mods at PHS and then to remodel the vocation building behind PHS. Whitesell said the Building Trades class does not have funding to build a house next year so these projects could “keep the program afloat.”

“Where will we put the kids?” Taylor asked.

Whitesell replied that Gehrand Bechand from the Building Trades class estimated it would take seven to 10 days for each mod, and then students could be moved back into an exterior finished room. Then Building Trades students could complete exterior work.

Funding for the project would come out of the deferred maintenance fund, Whitesell said.

Discussion on an investigative report involving Polson School Board Trustees and a Polson teacher was tabled. A special meeting will be scheduled at the end of August to discuss the report and recommendations.

The next regular board meeting will be held on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. in the district office conference room.
