Editor:

As spokesperson for The People’s Voice, Inc., we thank the many members who have made donations to The People’s Voice, Inc.  Thank you notes and stamps have been purchased separately by our members. We do not take money from our fund for these types of expenditures. Attorney Howard Toole is working very hard for us.

He needs to be paid, and you, the membership, have made it possible to keep up with our payments. Several members of our group have pledged to donate $100 each from our per-capitas. The tribal council, through its attorneys, have taken it upon themselves to sue us in the U.S. Court of Appeals because they do not want us to have a recall amendment. However, Stanley Speaks, Regional Director, had his solicitors look it over, tweak it somewhat, and approve it. We are being accused of recalling a councilperson while we wait for a secretarial election. How preposterous is this? In order for the recall amendment to become law, the tribal membership must vote “yes” or “no” at a secretarial election held by BIA. The tribal council is not involved in a secretarial election. If the yeses win, and the people want this authority, it will then become law and put into our tribal constitution. Unfortunately for the tribal council, they went directly to the U.S. Court of Appeals, bypassing the Regional Director in Portland, and the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. They were sternly reprimanded by the Court of Appeals, and told to go through channels. We all know that the tribal council controls everything, and I mean everything, that goes on. Whose going to be the “fall” guy, the council or tribal attorney John Harrison? We still need your financial help. We are not asking tribal members from Hot Springs, who donated last summer to make a donation. You tribal members are really donating, and we appreciate every dollar we receive. You guys rock. All of us that believe in justice in our tribes are coming forward.
