POLSON — At peak time at the 2010 Skatejam at the Polson Skatepark on July 31, 40 to 50 skaters swooped around the half pipe and ollied off the hip.

Mini-contests were held all day, such as a mini-half pipe and a game of Skate, like a game of Horse on skateboards, took center stage, according to Dever Graham, who spearheaded the event. The jam went from noon until 5 p.m.

“All the little kids were having a lot of fun and asking about the product toss about every five minutes,” Graham said.

At about 4:15 p.m., Graham and other skateboarders held a 20-minute product toss, a sort of catch-the-bride’s-bouquet for skateboarders who gather in the pipe.

One lucky kid won a skateboard deck, but first he had to beat the other kids scrambling up the pipe and over the fence to claim the deck.

Maybe the cooler weather was part of the reason, but more spectators than last year turned out to watch the skaters, Graham said.

Graham said he had lots of input from some of the older kids, and Eric Johnson provided music for the event. Graham wrote to skateboard companies and asked for prizes, while Edge of the World in Missoula provided more give-aways.

And then there was some really good news.

“There were no bad injuries,” Graham said.
