Jean Mackie Cumming

CHARLO — Jean Mackie Cumming, 90, passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 28.

Born on April 30, 1923, to Harold and Nellie (Twichell) Mackie in Southern California, she went on to become a newspaper reporter after education at Santa Barbara State. She married James A. Cumming in 1942 and as a military wife she lived numerous places before settling in Columbia Falls in the late 1940s, where James was an attorney.

Jean had many passions in life, her family, the Garden Club and her cats; but her main passion was horses and horse shows.

Her husband, parents, brother Sonny Mackie and a grandson who died in infancy all precede her in death.

Jean’s children Ed (Loree) Cumming and Jewell Doty; grandchildren Tricia, Jerry, Kenny, Dennis, Kim, and Michelle; 17 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren survive her.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia Falls with memorial services being held at 2 p.m., Thursday, in the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Polson. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the D’aste Women’s Club, Mission Valley Garden Club or a charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences may be left at: fosterfhandcrematory.com.
