News from the Mission Mountain Audubon Society

POLSON — “The Great Backyard Bird Count: the Winter Birds of the Mission Valley” by Pat Jamieson, outdoor recreation planner for the National Bison Range, will be the next educational program of the Mission Mountain Audubon Society on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Polson Library Meeting room.

Pat will not only help you navigate the Great Backyard Bird Count website, she will also discuss some of the special and unusual birds that pop up in the Mission Valley during winter. And on Saturday, Feb. 15, she’ll do a “backyard count” along the Nature Trail at the Bison Range, where you are welcome to join her anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, with Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada and sponsorship from Wild Birds Unlimited. It is held over the President’s Day Weekend (Feb.14-17). This is a free, fun event held in February each year. Anyone of any age or skill level can participate by counting birds and entering their tallies online. All you do is count birds at your favorite location for at least 15 minutes on one or more days during the count weekend. You can even go to different locations as long as you enter those numbers as separate counts.

Your observations are important because no single scientist or team of scientists could hope to capture so much information about birds across the United States and Canada in only four days. The more who participate, the better the snapshot we will have of this winter’s birds. To find out more about the count, and to explore past results, go to: http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc.
