BIG ARM — There was something for everybody at the Big Arm Bash on July 24 — water fights for the young-at-heart, games for the kids, antique vehicles and wagons for car nuts, a presentation on the Big Arm Schoolhouse for history buffs, a barbecue lunch for the hungry and T-shirts commemorating the event for everyone.

Middle school student Dominic Rosatti lives just across Hwy. 93 from the Big Arm Schoolhouse. Rosatti said the best thing about Big Arm Day was soaking Polson in the water fights.

“We might go to school in Polson,” Rosatti said, “but it’s not our hometown.”

Both Big Arm and Polson residents brought their appetites, since approximately 300 people came for a fundraising lunch to celebrate Big Arm’s centennial. The Big Arm crew served beef brisket on a bun with barbecue sauce and caramelized onions, corn on the cob, homemade baked beans and coleslaw and soda or water with deep-dish apple pie for dessert.

The Clarke family from Calgary, Alberta, was staying in the campground at Big Arm State Park and came over on a whim. They ended up staying for a couple of hour so Elias could dig for quarters in the sawdust and throw balls at a pyramid of cans. Mom Deena ended up winning the 50/50 pot, too.

Big Arm resident Alison Meslin said about 40 people worked on committees to put the event together. Money raised will be used to complete renovations on the Big Arm Schoolhouse.
