RONAN — For the 23rd year in a row, Tim Ryan’s Mission Valley Scholarship “Golf Tourney and Writer’s Night” entertained golfers and local families.

The event, which donates scholarship money to local students, drew spectators and athletes from all over Montana. After the golf tournament, golfers and music enthusiasts enjoyed an evening featuring local musical talent — not to mention Nashville big shots Tim Ryan and Mac McAnnally.

“The thing that makes this so great is the people who turn out,” Ryan explained.

Mission Valley Golf Professional Ty Weingart estimated that 500 people attended the performance and 195 golfers competed in the golf tournament.

Weingart said he was pleased with the $10,500 raised for the scholarship recipients, especially since this year’s golf tournament hosted 10 less teams than last year.

In the evening, local families were in for a  musical treat with a performance from McAnnally, who according to Ryan is the cream of the crop in the music industry.

“(McAnnally) just played with Jimmy Buffet two days ago, and he thinks enough of this to come here,” Ryan explained.

This is the fourth time McAnnally has played at the event. Originally from a small town in Mississippi, McAnnally said his family loves Montana and has wanted to come back to the area since the last time he played at the event six years ago.

“I’m just lucky enough to tag along,” McAnnally humbly admitted.

Other musical talent included young Mariah Saltzman, The Maw Brothers of Kalispell, Chelsea Lipscomb of Ronan and Jae Hatt of Big Fork.

The music ended around 11 p.m. and the weary golfers and local music connoisseurs made their way home.

“I would like to thank the community,” Ryan said. “Because for 23 years they keep on showing up.”
