ELMO — If it’s the third weekend in July, the Standing Arrow Powwow must be in town.

The population of Elmo will grow by a couple of thousand people for the powwow held on July 16, 17 and 18. This year also will be the inaugural year for the new powwow grounds, all complete except for some landscaping.

Host drum will be the Chief Cliff Singers. A drum contest will be held during the powwow with $18,500 added prize money. First prize will be $10,000, second $5,000, third, $2,500 and fourth place will take home $1,000. The first 10 drums will be paid, and drums are asked to bring their own chairs.

Registration for dancers opens at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 16 with a grand entry at 7 p.m.

Action resumes on Saturday with parade registration at 9 a.m. and the powwow parade at 10 a.m.

Alvina Tenas, Standing Arrow Powwow Parade Chair, said there was a great turnout last year and she hopes it’s good again this year.

“Fix your float anyway you want or come on horseback,” Tenas said. “The parade is just fun for everybody.”

Saturday grand entries will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The stickgame tourney with $10,000 added money and a $150 entry fee per team also begins on Saturday.

A softball tournament is also scheduled for Saturday.

On Sunday, the grand entry will be at 1 p.m.

Specials include 13 and up Jingle Dance, winner take all, sponsored by 2009 Lil’ Miss Kootenai Alexandriana Pierre and a 12 and under hand drum contest sponsored by Allison Wilder. First place hand drummer will receive $200, second $150 and third $70.

Dance categories include golden age, 60 +, adults, 18 to 50 years, teens 13-17 years, juniors 7-12, and tiny tots.

Food items, such as Willie Burgers, and other vendors will be available on the powwow grounds. As always, no alcohol, drugs, fireworks or weapons are permitted on the powwow grounds.
