CHARLO – Charlo’s accomplished class of 2011 warmed the hearts of the community one last time Sunday as they gave an overwhelming “thank-you” to teachers, parents, and staff for the past four years.
The talented class was awarded more than $800,000 in scholarships and awards.
“You’ve stuck it out and made it,” high school principal Steve Love said during the beginning of the ceremony.
Joel Lewis and Spencer Shafter share the title of valedictorian. Austin Bauer is salutatiorian.
During his salutatory address, Bauer spoke about how Charlo is a unique place to be raised.
He mentioned how 12 of 26 graduates have been by his side since he began kindergarten.
“We are a class that will intermingle with others,” Bauer said. “That’s the small kind of community Charlo is.”
Lewis was awarded a $414,000 scholarship to the Air Force Academy, and was also awarded the Elks Local Scholarship for Most Valuable Student Award for $1,000, the GEAR UP Achievement Award for $1,500 and the Elks National Scholarship for the Most Valuable Student Award for $4,000.
“I want to thank my class for welcoming me in when I arrived in 8th grade,” Lewis said. “This class is kind, caring and motivated. We have a choice to be content or to push forward. The time is now,” he added.
Shafter will be heading to New York University on a $25,000 scholarship, and was also awarded the Montana University System Honor Scholarship, worth $20,000. Shafter also received an additional 13 scholarships and awards totaling $14,550.
Twenty-six of thirty-five graduating seniors received either award money or scholarships.
