POLSON — Kids at Riverside Park will be playing on a safer surface thanks to a $15,000 donation from the Polson Rotary Club.

Polson Parks Department head Karen Sargeant said a 12-inch layer of processed wood fiber material will replace the existing sand in the playground. Concrete curbing will be installed to divide the playground from the parking lot.

Processed wood fiber material looks a lot like mulch, but without any sharp edges, and will provide plenty of cushioning, making it a safer surface for children to run and jump. The material also is Americans with Disabilities Act accessible so youngsters in wheelchairs can roll around in the playground.

“Curbing will solve the ‘river runs through it’ problem when it rains,” Sargeant explained.

Presently when it rains, water runs off the hill, across the parking lot and into the playground, soaking the sand and leaving large puddles under the swings and slides.

The money to fund the improvement was raised by the Polson Rotary Club’s annual Festival of the Youth, which is hosted in Riverside Park and includes such events as a raffle, chili cook off, children’s games and activities, live music, food and beverages.

This year, the Polson Rotary Club will once again host the Festival of the Youth on Aug. 28 in Riverside Park, with proceeds of the event benefiting the Mission Valley Mariners.
