ST. IGNATIUS — On July 10, hundreds of people from around the Northwest will gather against the backdrop of the majestic Mission Mountains to take a step back to a simpler time at the eighth annual Mission Valley Auction.

Typically held on the second Saturday in July, the auction is put on by the Mission Valley Amish community to raise funds for its nonprofit private school. About 30 students in first through eighth grade attend the Mission Valley School, which receives 12 percent of the profits from the auction. Anyone can consign items, and in addition to locally-made furniture and cabins, donated items and other typical auction items are also welcomed.

“We welcome any consignments,” auction board member David Kurtz said, as long as items are in good condition in keeping with the auction’s longstanding tradition of offering high quality goods.

Nearly 100 quilts from Amish communities around the country will be auctioned off next weekend, Kurtz said. The auction offers a plethora of handmade furniture, household items and farm equipment, as well as cabins, gazebos and storage sheds.

“It’s a very big variety,” Kurtz said.

Auction-goers can also look forward to a barbecued chicken lunch, complete with all the trimmings such as mashed potatoes, cole slaw, homemade pie and ice cream, prepared by the women of the local Amish community and available for less than $10 a plate.

The auction opens for viewing at 9:30 a.m. July 10 and will be held adjacent to Foothill Post and Lumber at the corner of Foothill Road and Allison Road in St. Ignatius. For more information or to consign items, contact David Kurtz at 745-8822.
