POLSON — School’s out and 34 kids interested in theater were signed up for the Port Polson Players Summer Kids Camp. The camp was held at the John Dowdall Theater during the week of June 14-19.

The kids learned their lines, memorized the songs and performed the play “100 Candles” on June 19.

Sarah Kinzle, 6, had four lines, and she was very excited about saying her them during the play.

“100 Candles” honors Polson’s Centennial according to Karen Lewing, Port Polson Players artistic director.

The camp wasn’t all work, however. There was the annual hat parade where kids constructed headwear at home — bunches of balloons, giant birthday cakes, even a hat with feathery greens and a bit of orange carrot peeping out of a brown felt hat.

Camper Kellen Wright liked making his hat. It was  “a giant snake on top of a weed-whacker.”

Other fun camp events were a historical figure day and favorite president or first lady where kids dressed as their favorites.

“My favorite part,” veteran camper Remington Janeway said, “is meeting new kids and helping them out.”

This year Lewing said the kids wrote poems or songs about Polson’s Centennial. The final scene of “100 Candles” incorporated songs about a dozen campers wrote.

The finale of “100 Candles” was the Polson song. The song is the official anthem of the city of Polson, written 25 years ago for the original “Valley Full of Diamonds.” Polson kids learn the song in their schools, Lewing said.

After kid’s camp, the Port Polson Players’ next venture will be “Lover’s Leap,” a fast-paced comedy. The play will open on June 30 and run through July 18. Please call the Port Polson Players Box Office at 883-9212 for reservations for “Lover’s Leap.”
