POLSON —Area residents could take a look at the refurbished Polson Loaves and Fish Pantry when the organization held its grand opening on June 18 from 10 to 4 p.m. The pantry has moved to the old Folk Shop building across from Woody’s at 904 1st Street E.

A crowd of 60 to 70 people were on hand for opening remarks from Polson Mayor Pat DeVries, pantry founder Bob Strong, local contractor Hu Beaver and USDA Rural Development rep Lad Barney from Kalispell.

Volunteer gave tours all day, showing off shelves loaded with food, bins full of containers for rice, macaroni and other dry items, food prep sinks, coolers, freezers and a new office where clients and pantry workers can complete paperwork.

The pantry’s nearly new forklift was also on display. The forklift and a walk-in freezer still in the shipping boxes were both obtained with a matching-fund grant from the USDA.

Polson Loaves and Fish Pantry Board President Sid Rundell said the whole community came together to support the food pantry. Rundell added that the pantry is an all-volunteer organization, with 50% of the board members also volunteering and serving clients.

The pantry provides food for clients in the zone from Minesinger Trail north to Yellow Bay on the east shore and Proctor on the west shore.

Clients need to reside in this zone, show a picture I.D. and have some proof of address, such as a Mission Valley Power bill or a phone bill with their address on it.

The food pantry is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Starting in July, Polson Loaves and Fish will also be open on Saturday.
