The Polson Lil’ Lakers couldn’t have picked a better time to win their first game at the 2010 Splash Classic.

The 10U team entered Sunday’s bracket play with an 0-3 record and had to play the top-seeded Helena Capital Thunder, who went 3-0 in pool play and allowed only seven runs in the process.

The Lil’ Lakers wasted no time against the Thunder, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brayland Coles, Marina Mayorga, Mikala Craft and catcher Lauren Lefthand all came around to score in the inning. Camas Renault had a double in the rally, but was called out for making a false move toward second base.

The four-run cushion was all that Lil’ Laker pitcher Haley Fyant would need. She held the top-seeded team to only two runs to give Polson their first win of the tournament.

“They were pretty excited to finally win a game. There is only three returning players, the rest are all rookies, so for them to pull off the upset was pretty exciting. They all had to pull together and it was nice to see them get that win,” Lil’ Laker manager Scott Renault said.

The Thunder actually took the lead in the top of the fifth, but because of the drop dead rule the runs were wiped off the board.

The Lakers couldn’t make the most of their second life. They loss 8-2 to the Emeralds in the semifinals. In the third-fourth game, the Lakers entered the final inning leading the Fury 8-7, but watched the Frenchtown team score four runs for a 11-8 victory.
