EUREKA — The Mission Valley Mariners B team’s bats started heating up along with the weather last weekend.

The Mariners crushed six home runs to sweep a doubleheader over the Kalispell Lakers at home Friday night.

Chris Clary, Cole McArthur, Jake Young and Dalton Mohlzon all went deep in an 11-1 victory in the opener. Clary and McArthur each had a three-run homer in the Mariners’ 11-4 victory in the nightcap.

“It was nice to see them come out and get their sticks going,” Mariner manager Chris Brown said. “That was by far the best hitting all year.”

First basemen Clary started the Mariners’ home run derby in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot. Third baseman Mohlzon followed in the fifth with another solo shot. Young and McArthur got in the action with a home run in the Mariners five-run sixth inning to end the game in the sixth.

Robbie Gauthier went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. He struck out nine and allowed only two hits.

In the nightcap, Clary’s three-run shot over the right field fence in the third, highlighted a five-run inning to put the Mariners up for good. McArthur followed that with another three-run homer in the fourth.

Mariner pitcher Kellen Hoyt struggled with his control early on, but was able to limit the damage and oly gave up only three runs in the first three innings. After the third, Hoyt found his grove and pitched the complete game to earn his second win of the season. Hoyt  allowed only three hits and struck out seven.

“After the third inning he settled down. He started getting confidence in his offspeed pitches and was throwing the fastball right around the plate,” Brown said of Hoyt. “It was a great effort.”

The Mariners finished the week by splitting a doubleheader with Kootenai in Eureka Saturday.

In the opener, the Mariners gave up seven runs in the first two innings and never could recover in a 10-3 loss. In the second game, Austin VonTom kept the Kootenai Valley bats silent and Gauthier led the Mariners offensive attack in a 6-2 win.

After giving up a run in the first inning, VonTom shut out Kootenai Valley until the seventh inning. Von Tom struck out six, scattered four hits and issued four walks. Kevin Hagadorn relieved VonTom in the seventh to pick up the save.

Gauthier went 3 for 3 at the plate and drove in two and scored two runs. Mohlzon went 2 for 3 with a RBI.

The Mariners aren’t scheduled to play again until June 21, when the host the Libby Loggers, but they will try to make up some off their rained out games before then.
