PABLO — To strengthen the bonds between Two Eagle River School students and tribal elders, TERS holds an Elders Week each year.

TERS Principal Clarice King said, “Despite the weather, we did have a good Elder’s Week.”

King added that some Elders who normally attend didn’t because they were getting out of the hospital.

“We sure thought of them,” King said.

This year Elders Week began on May 24 with an awards ceremony at Blue Bay at 9 a.m. followed by a barbecue lunch. Even though it was cool rainy day, TERS students were swimming and fishing from the docks or huddled around the barbecue. Other activities were volleyball, boat rides, relay races and a pie-eating contest.

Tuesday, May 25, featured a 5k walk/run at TERS, Elder Olympics with cribbage, ping pong and foosball, lunch at 12:30 p.m., softball on the TERS field all day and a stick game tournament at 1 p.m. The stick games were well attended, King said.

Elders Week wrapped up on May 26 with eighth-grade graduation at 3 p.m. and a feast featuring roast beef and mashed potatoes and all the trimmings at 4 p.m. A live auction in the gym at 5:30 raised about $3,000 for next year’s Elders Week.  The powwow at 7 p.m. was “huge this year” with nine drums, King said.

The Elders and the TERS students and staff already are looking forward to next year’s Elders Week.
