News from the Kuilix Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution

ST. IGNATIUS — Good Citizens Essay Contest Awards were presented on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the United Methodist Church in St. Ignatius. This is the first year for our new Kuilix Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, to offer this annual contest.

The essays were written at local high schools and the subject title was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” Our judges were Judge Deborah Kim Christopher and Attorney John Mercer from Polson and Denver Holt, founder of the Owl Institute in Charlo.

The contest winners are: 1st place ($250), Connor Daugherty from Charlo High School; 2nd place, Caden Howlett, Polson High School; 3rd place winners, Katelynn B. Hogge of St. Ignatius High School and Angela North Piegan from Ronan High School.

The Kuilix Chapter of the DAR was formally recognized on Dec. 8, 2012. Our membership extends to Thompson Falls, Polson and St. Ignatius.

The DAR was founded and recognized by Congress in 1890. We are a non-profit, non-political service organization that promotes education, historic preservation and patriotism. We also support many schools, including Indian schools in Oregon and Oklahoma.

Our Kuilix chapter is named in honor of a Pend d’Oreille woman warrior who fought in battles in behalf of her tribe in the early 19th century.

We welcome any woman 18 and older, regardless of ethnic or religious background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, to join our local DAR chapter.
