Editor,
This spring voters will be electing new members to school boards throughout the valley. Traditionally, these elections have low voter turnout and generate little public interest.
When I ask voters why they didn’t cast a ballot in a school board election they usually give the following reasons: a) “I no longer have kids in school,” and/or, b) “I don’t know any of the candidates.”
I urge all voters to become more informed of the issues in your local school district, get to know the candidates, and then vote. If you think you have no stake in the outcome of the election, look at your last property tax statement. If your statement is similar to mine, you will see about 35 percent of your total tax bill going to support your local school district, and the majority of the taxes collected come from permissive levies that require no voter approval.
School board elections do impact all citizens in each district. Vote for those candidates who will spend your tax dollars wisely, abide by board policies, and listen to the concerns of those they serve.
