RONAN — Once again, St. Luke Community Healthcare Network is offering $500 college scholarships to high school seniors at seven area high schools. Counselors at Arlee, Charlo, Hot Springs, Polson, Ronan, St. Ignatius and Two Eagle River have received the scholarship application instruction sheet.

The yearly presentation of $3,500 to area high school graduates has been named in honor of longtime employee and former St. Luke director of nursing Rosemary Miller.

“We hope that the example demonstrated by this exceptional lady will inspire others to further their education – particularly in health care,” Steve Todd, CEO at St. Luke said. “A dependent of a Network employee or a student majoring in a health related field may be given preference — but certainly those are not the only ones who should consider making application.”

The basic criteria for a Rosemary Miller Memorial Scholarship is a high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Other factors that will be considered are: activities, honors, awards, community service activities, and applicant’s education objectives.

Last year’s scholarship recipients were Ronan High School graduates Joseph Dresen and Shayne Friesen; Trinda Foust from Charlo High School; Arlee graduate Albert Plant III; Ryan Windauer who graduated from Mission Valley Christian Academy; and Polson High School graduates James Larson and Heidi Rausch.

“The family is thrilled to have our mother’s dedication and commitment to healthcare recognized in this fashion,” said Leah Emerson, one of five girls and four boys born to Rosemary and Harry Miller.

Emerson notes that her mom’s devotion to caring for others inspired all of her daughters to enter professions which focused on human services in some manner including nursing and work in early childhood development, audiology/speech pathology and disability services. Scholarship applications are available at any of the seven high school counselors’ offices or at St. Luke Community Hospital and must be returned to the attention of the Administration at St. Luke no later than April 15, 2014.
