DRUMMOND — Area high school cowboys and cowgirls geared up for end of the spring high school rodeo season by competing in last weekend’s District 5 High School Rodeo, held in Drummond. It was the final chance for rodeo athletes to qualify for next week’s Montana High School Rodeo Association’s state finals in Bozeman.
Members of the Mission Valley High School Rodeo Club also competed in both the qualifying rodeos that the final two days of rodeo. Younger members from the area also participated in the Wrangler Division, held in conjunction with the high school competition.
On Sunday, Becky Jo Dumont of Charlo won the barrel racing competition, clocking a time of 17.96 seconds. Polson’s Lexi Bagnell took second in pole bending in 21.58, while Jaylynn Garrison of Arlee earned fourth in 22.18 and Moriah Gilmore was fifth in 22.75.
Garrison took second in goat tying with a run of 9.70 seconds, followed by Plains cowgirl Jessica Read in third at 9.78. Rebecca Lake followed in fourth at 10.22 and Bagnell took fifth in 10.73.
Arlee’s Nichele Marmon earned fifth in breakaway roping at 15.59, while Shawn George of Ronan took fourth in tie-down roping with a run of 29.46 seconds.
In Monday’s rodeo, Dumont added a fourth-place in barrel racing in 18.22 seconds, followed by Garrison in seventh in 18.52 and Kelsie Blevins in 10th in 18.83.
Gilmore led the local pole benders, placing fifth in 25.27 seconds, and Read took third in goat tying with a run of 9.80.
Dumont had a blistering run of 4.78 seconds in breakaway roping, taking second place. Marmon followed close behind with a 6.31-second run to earn third place.
Shawn George earned fourth in team roping with a 28.20-second run and also finished fourth in all-around cowboy points.
Garrison also took fourth in all-around cowgirl points.
Qualifying rodeos were also held in Drummond on Friday and Saturday, May 28-29.
Next week the local rodeo athletes will compete in Montana High School Rodeo Association State Finals, which will be held June 9-13 at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds in Bozeman.
