POLSON  — A pack of bikers poured across the Armed Forces Memorial Bridge a little before 8 a.m. on May 21 as the Polson Police held traffic in the east bound lane. The bicycle riders included kindergarten through 4th graders, parents and friends who had met in Swanee’s Bar and Grill parking lot to participate in Polson Bike/Walk to Work Day.

Not only was it a beautiful morning incorporated with good exercise, but kids who walked or rode their bikes to school got a light breakfast of fruit, juice, doughnuts or banana bread.

They also got to put their name in the hat to win one of about 40 prizes.

Second-grader Cali Cannon lives on Finley Point, but her mom hauled her bicycle into Century 21 Big Sky Real Estate. Cali joined a group of kids led by an adult and rode on into Linderman School. Cali said she liked getting ahead of her mom’s car on the way to school.

Another gathering place was Grenier Lane on Kerr Dam Road. Cherry Valley teacher Doug Crosby, one of the adults accompanying kids from this location, reported that Caleb Pierre, a first grader, had a bike wreck as he raced a friend.

Crosby said Caleb tucked and rolled, then got up and got right back on his bike and rode to school. Caleb had no comment.

Organizer Melinda Leas said about 120 kids from Linderman and approximately 50 students from Cherry Valley participated in Polson Bike/Walk to Work Day. Leas said some neighborhoods set up convoys to school, also.

The class with the most bikers and walkers won a pizza party donated by Stageline Pizza.

Mrs. Crosby’s first graders won the pizza party at Cherry Valley, with both Mrs. Crosby and student teacher Anna Barrows riding their bikes also.

Mrs. Nordberg’s second graders claimed the Linderman pizza party.

Donated prizes included a bike from Wal-Mart, ice cream coupons from The Cove, bike helmets from St. Joseph’s Medical Center, a tote bag and purses from Mission Mountain Natural Foods, pasta from County Pasta, books from Page by Page books and bike repairs from Matt Seeley.

Leas, who owns PilatesPlus, said Polson Bike/Walk to Work Day is her way of helping out and giving back to the community.

“It’s not that hard to ride your bike or walk to school,” Leas added and many kids from Linderman and Cherry Valley would agree.
