POLSON — Cherry pies, cherry art, cherry pit-spitting and a cherry stem-tying contest are only a few of the foods and events planned to celebrate cherries for the Flathead Cherry Festival on July 21 and 22.

“We are going to have Flathead cherries,” Boone Goddard, cherry festival steering committee member for the Polson Business Community.

Last year during the event, growers took orders for Flathead cherries since they weren’t ripe yet.

Sponsored by the PBC and the Flathead Lake Cherry Growers, the festival has a new event: an art contest for middle school and high school students. The art is displayed in the old Montana Home Lighting building at 209 Main, and prizes will be awarded at noon on July 22 in front of the Cove Deli and Pizza.

For the kids, there will be arts and crafts in front of Jackie M’s Footwear at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, and later, at 2 p.m., a cherry pit-spitting contest in front of the Cove Deli and Pizza.

The fun continues on Sunday, July 22, with a 2 p.m. magic show in front of the Cove Deli and a children’s pie-eating contest at 3 p.m. in front of Jackie M’s Footwear.

Adults can also enter the cherry pit-spitting and pie-eating contests in their own divisions following the children’s competition. Chefs can bring their most unique food made with cherries for judging in front of Jackie M’s Footwear at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 22. Contestants are asked to make four samples for judges and also bring along their recipe.

Arts and crafts vendors, food vendors and entertainers, such as the Great Scots bagpipers, will be strolling Main Street.

On Saturday evening, grab some dinner at the food court, offering items from Papa Don’s and Grills Gone Wild as well as other chefs, and stay to dance the night away from 6 to 10 p.m., with Southern Comfort. The street dance will be held in front of the Cove Deli and Pizza.

Cherry festival participants can also register to win $1,000 worth of gift certificates from downtown merchants.
