GREAT FALLS — Last week a former St. Ignatius resident was sentenced to 35 years, none suspended, in the Montana State Prison for child abuse.

According to officials in Montana’s 8th District Court, Riley James Charlo Whitworth, 21, will also have to register as a violent offender after he was convicted of felony three counts of aggravated assault, assault on a minor and criminal endangerment.

Charlo Whitworth’s conviction resulted from a January 2013 incident where Great Falls authorities arrested the man and the mother of a child who was brought to a hospital with injuries so severe the toddler had to be flown to Seattle for treatment. The 35-year sentence handed down by District Judge Greg Pinski was the maximum allowed for the charges.

Charlo Whitworth is a 2011 graduate of St. Ignatius High School. The child’s mother, Alexis Paul, is a 2012 graduate of St. Ignatius High School. Paul was also sentenced last week to five years in the Montana Department of Corrections for her role in the boy’s injuries. She pled guilty to child endangerment in February.

The child was returned to his father in Lake County after the incident.
