BUTTE — The Maidens lost another close came after their last-at-bat rally fell one run short against Whitefish in Butte Saturday.

In the makeup game against the Lady Bulldogs, the Maidens were trying to erase a four-run deficit in the seventh, but their rally was cut short, when Payge Delaurenti was thrown out at second trying to stretch her two-run single into a double. With the heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Lady Bulldogs the Maidens drop to 0-5 in the Northwestern A conference and 4-13 overall. Losing close games is nothing new to the Maidens, with the one-run loss to the Lady Bulldogs Saturday, six of their last seven losses have been by two runs or less.

“It’s encouraging and frustrating,” Ronan coach Tom Peterson said of the close losses. “It’s encouraging because we’re in every single game and we’re a young team, but it’s also frustrating because we have our chances to win and we just can’t get it done...They work hard all the time and I feel like we’re getting better, we just can’t get over the hump, but it’s not because lack of effort.”

All the Maidens needed to get over the hump against the Lady Bulldogs was a clutch hit, but it didn’t come until the final inning. The Maidens stranded nine runners in the first six innings of the game.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win, we just couldn’t capitalize. It was too little too late,” Peterson said.

The loss capped of tough weekend in Butte, where the Maidens went 1-3 at the Laverne Combo Softball Invitational. The one bright spot for the Maidens at the tournament was a 3-0 victory over the Anaconda Lady Copperheads in the final game of the tournament.

Maiden ace Bethany Colman kept the Lady Copperheads hitless through all five innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.

“You hope to come away from the weekend feeling better about yourselves and I hope we did that. That win will go a long way in helping the girls feel better about themselves,” Peterson said.

The Maidens will wrap up their season Saturday in Whitefish.
