POLSON — Both the Warriors and Scarlets added to Arlee’s trophy case at the District 14-C track meet.

With trophies being awarded only to the top two teams at the six-team meet, Arlee coach Russell Baker wanted his team to walk away with a trophy, and both teams attained the goal.

The Warriors won three events and scored 93 points to finish behind Charlo and 13 points ahead of Hot Springs. Behind Becca Nelson’s winning throw in the discus, the Scarlets scored 112 points to finish behind the Lady Vikings and 19 points ahead of the Savage Heat. More important than finishing second at the meet, Baker will bring his whole team to the Western C Divisional Track Meet started Friday at the Missoula County Stadium.

“They all placed. They all scored points, so it was definitely a team effort,” Baker said.

Arlee senior Kyle Felsman cleared 5 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump and reached 39 feet, 4.5 inches to win the triple jump. After missing last year with an ankle injury, Felsman is nearing his state qualifying jump of 41 feet, 2 inches in the triple jump as a sophomore.

“It’s not as good as I thought I’d do, but a win’s a win,” Felsman said. The district meet was only the third meet Felsman has competed in this season, so there is still room for improvement and he hopes to be peaking at the state tournament in two weeks.

Felsman ended up placing in five events, finishing second in the 200 (24.03), third in the javelin (142-5) and fourth in the long jump (18-9.5).

Warrior sophomore Sam Nelson won the javelin with a personal-best throw of 154 feet, 11 inches, a big improvement from the 132 feet he was throwing earlier in the season.

“I was hoping to get to 160,” Nelson said. “And I will get there,” he added.

Sam also placed fourth in the triple jump (36-9.5) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (20.66).

Sam’s twin sister Becca was the only other Arlee champion at the meet, winning the discus with a throw of 89 feet, 2.5 inches. Becca also placed second in the high jump (4-6), third in the javelin (103-8), fourth in the pole vault (6-6) and sixth in the shot put (25-9.5).

Aspen Meidinger finished second in the discus and shot put. She threw 88 feet, 7 inches in the discus and 29 feet, 10.5 inches in the shot put. Scarlet senior Chelsea Allaire finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (18.86).

She also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (55.80) and fourth in the javelin (96-1).

The Arlee track team went into the district meet with a team goal, Baker said for the divisional meet the focus will shift on the individual.

“We’re going to try to get as many to state as we can. Our goal was to get second, now we’re going to concentrate on the events they have a chance to get to state in,” Baker said.

Zack Carver, who finished third in the 100-meter dash at districts, is the only member of the team that made it to the state tournament last season.
