POLSON – “Fabulous” is what head tennis coach Bob Hislop had to say about Pirate and Lady Pirate tennis. With the girls dominating, only dropping two losses to their 12 wins and the boys not far behind at 10-4 on the season, “fabulous” fits the Polson team like a glove.

Leading the Lady Pirates are two sets of doubles teams, that according to Hislop, “are really, really strong.” Team Mollybeth Hendrix/Taylor Rost and Karly Rochin/Marlee Congdon have been posting consistent wins and show strong contention for postseason play.

The Lady Pirates have won the last seven divisional tournaments and are striving to make it to eight.

“It will be between us and Whitefish,” Hislop said, stating an upcoming meet with Whitefish may give them a peek of what’s in store.

The boys have a few stand-outs of their own, including Hislop’s son, Brady, and Dylan McCrumb. Both boys boasted All-State titles last year with McCrumb finishing second in state and Hislop finishing third.

“Brady and Dylan have got to be the best two boys to come out of Polson tennis,” Hislop said.

Adding to the fire is junior Layne Zimmerman – also All State last year, and Tyler Dupuis. Coach Hislop says all four won matches at state last year and he expects to see great things out of them. He added junior Tommy Mercer is also very important to the team. The Pirates are favored to show well in the postseason along with Corvallis and Billings Central.

At home on Saturday both the Pirates and Lady Pirates posted wins over Stevensville and Columbia Falls. The girls only allowed one loss against Columbia Falls going 6-1 and 7-0 against Stevensville. All three doubles teams shut out their opponents in the bout with Stevensville with 8-0 scores posted across the board. Against Columbia Falls Cassie Carlyle and team Mollie Lemm/Shawna Lenz picked up double-bagel victories 6-0, 6-0.

The boys also picked up a split going 3-4 against Stevensville and 5-2 against Columbia Falls. Dylan McCrumb finished on top for the boys, winning both his matches for the day.

Hislop believes that not only have the upperclassman been doing their jobs on the court but has also seen leadership come out of his seniors.

“The seniors are what make this team mesh,” he said. “They are all really good leaders.”

Hislop is also excited to see the younger kids competing at high levels saying he has an arsenal of talented freshman.

“It’s nice having a good core of seniors, but it’s exciting to see the younger ones coming up,” he said. “Cool.”

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will compete at their last regular season match May 10 in Libby before heading to postseason starting with Divisionals May 15-17 in Kalispell.
