POLSON — Polson’s FC U10 Girls Soccer team ended a perfect season at the Showcase Tournament in Great Falls the weekend of June 28-29, having no losses all year. Polson FC sent four teams to the Showcase tournament including the U10 girls’ team. The teams faced strong competition playing teams from much larger cities such as Missoula, Kalispell, Bozeman and Great Falls.

The U10 girls team proved this season they not only could compete, but also win. Their season began in Missoula April 26 with wins against Missoula Strikers and Great Falls Electric City. Over the next two months, the girls played teams from Whitefish, Kalispell, Great Falls and Bigfork.

“The girls were a little intimidated at the beginning of the season, not sure if they could compete, but quickly realized they had the talent and teamwork to play against any team they went up against,” Assistant Coach Ann Moderie said. “They went from learning very basic skills at the beginning to understanding game strategy and positioning under the direction of Coach Adam. It was amazing to see the progress and fun to see the girls bond.”

Adam Fansher became Polson FC’s Technical Director this year after coaching the U16 Boys team last season and U10 and U11 Boys and Girls teams the previous year. Fansher hails from Chicago where he played for several soccer clubs, including a German club that faced international teams.

“We are very lucky to have someone of Adam’s caliber living here in Polson and willing to volunteer countless hours to our organization,” Moderie said.

The first game of the tournament matched the U10 girls up with Great Falls Electric City. They came from behind and won 3 to 2, with Kallie Finkbeiner scoring two goals and Sophia Moderie scoring one. On Sunday, they beat the Flathead Force 3 to 2. Goals again came from Finkbeiner and from the girls’ main goal keeper, Grace Simonich. Their third game of the tournament against the Bozeman Blitzz proved to be their toughest, testing each team’s defense. Several saves were made by keepers, Simonich and Emily Matt. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, Finkbeiner again coming up with a big goal to help the girls finish out their season with no losses.

The U10 girls’ team is following in the footsteps of other Polson FC teams finding recent success. The U14 Boys team won the state championship this year following a state championship by the U14 Girls in 2013. In 2012, the U12 Boys and U16 Boys both captured state titles.
