POLSON — Polson resident Henry Matter, 84, was killed in an accident at the intersection of Highway 93 and Highway 35 on April 21 at about 12:55 p.m.

According to Montana Highway Patrol officers, Matter was driving a 2005 Dodge dually pickup and pulling a fifth-wheel camper trailer.

He was westbound on Hwy. 35 waiting in the left turn lane at the intersection with Hwy. 93 in Polson when he apparently had an issue with his brakes. Matter could not get his vehicle to move for three or four cycles of the traffic light.

Matter apparently got out of his pickup and moved between the fifth-wheel camper trailer and his pickup and disconnected the electrical cable between the two rigs, which apparently released the trailer's brakes.

Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Randy Owens said the pickup rolled backward, catching Matter and dragging him before the left rear dually tires rolled over him.

The pickup continued rolling backward for about 30 feet before it hit a semi and came to the stop, causing minimal damage to both vehicles.

Matter was transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Polson where he was pronounced dead.
