RONAN – The Mission Mountain Golf Course in Ronan hosted a tournament with a different kind of agenda. On Saturday, July 19, golfers came from far and wide to gain so much more than a trophy — they came to raise money.

The Sagmiller/Williams ALS Memorial Golf Tournament, in it’s 12th year, raises funds to help families dealing with ALS, also known as Lou Gerhig’s disease. Some proceeds go to local scholarships for college-bound graduates.

Honoring the memory of Ken Sagmiller and Pat Williams, both local and avid golfers in the community who died of ALS, the tournament is slowly evolving in hopes to bring bigger crowds and more fun, according to Brian Grosswiler, the course’s general manager and golf pro,.

“It’s been a learning experience and growing process,” he said.

Golfers certainly had a blast on the course with some saying the mixture of weather and relaxed atmosphere made the tournament’s conditions just right for a round of golf.

“I wouldn’t say we are golfing,” Rod Cleveland of Team Kimber joked about their scores. “But we are having fun and it’s a pretty day, too.”

Along with Team Kimber, 29 teams competed, almost double from the year before. Grosswiler said last year’s total was 16 and the year before was only 14.

First, second and third place teams were rewarded with prizes. Special prizes were handed out for closest to the pin, longest drive, and longest putt. There was also a silent auction and luncheon for the golfers. The big attraction of the evening, however, was the first time inclusion of a live performance from CMT Award winner Chance McKinney. The concert was attended by about 250 fans.

“We tried something new with the concert,” Grosswiler said. “It turned out awesome, certainly good times.”

Grosswiler hopes to continue growing the event each year.

“We are trying to build this,” he said. “It’s a great cause. We just want everybody to have a good time.”
