POLSON — Despite heavy winds and a rainstorm on Friday, the course for Water Daze on Aug. 2 was calm, according to Mark Johnston, Mission Valley Aquatics.

Ali Bronsdon, Mission Valley Aquatics director, said she was glad the water was calm because many swim team members were swimming the one-mile race for the first time.

The 12th annual Water Daze drew 91 swimmers, a record for the event. Hannah Simpson, 8, was the youngest swimmer ever, and the oldest swimmer ever was Roger Smith, 71, although he was pushed by Cheryl Ward, 70.

This year the Flathead Lakers used the opportunity and the audience to show swimmers and their families an invasive species exhibit.

“Our goal is to grow Water Daze as a truly ‘days’ event with weekend water activities in the future … longer swims, pool swims and other water-related events,” Johnston said.

Proceeds from Water Daze went to support the Lake Monsters swim team.
