RONAN – The beef cattle, sheep, goats and swine formed long, twisting lines that took hours to judge last week at the Lake County fair, but tucked into the schedule were some events that are holding on to existence with only a few competitors.

Sierra Hutchin of Charlo competed with her diary cow, Reba, against only one other contestant. In dairy judging cows are evaluated based on the structure of their bones and udders.

Hutchin said the event isn’t harder than the others, but very few people enter because they have beef cows instead of dairy cows at home.

She said she enjoys showing Reba, and the added advantage of not having a ton of competition.

“There are a lot fewer people to go up against,” Hutchin said.

Alyssa Liddle is used to having a small crowd in her event. The 10th grade Charlo student competes in the sewing contest. For years it was only her and a couple of other girls participating in the Fashion Revue that concludes the season, but in this competition there were seven entrants.

“They all just decided to do it,” Liddle’s mother Tammy Young said. “Alyssa helped mentor them.”

Liddle, who constructed a wowing business skirt and blouse from all wool, said she was happy to mentor the girls and excited to see the new faces after nine years of competition.

“It was really fun to go back to the basics,” Liddle said.

Liddle said her event, while not the most popular, allows her to hone useful skills she can use in everyday life.

She plans to continue sewing for her personal pleasure. “I really enjoy it,” Liddle said. “I’m hoping to expand my horizons and try new things soon.”
