POLSON — Anderson Radio Broadcasting organized a new summer event called Summerfest that will embrace the previous car show and other events during the Sandpiper Art Festival weekend, Aug. 8 and 9.

The community-wide celebration of summer will offer several activities, events and opportunities, and create a fair-like atmosphere of fun, according to Dennis Anderson, president of Anderson Broadcasting.

As one of the larger revenue-generating weekends of the summer in Polson, the car show along with the art festival offers the community a variety of entertainment for the whole family.

The event kicks off Thursday Aug. 7, as the band Jimni Live will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Best Western KwaTaqNuk Resort and Casino in Polson.

Summerfest continues Friday with the car show.

The Mission Valley Cruisers Car Club put on the former car show, Cruisen by the Bay, for 13 years. After deciding they no longer wanted to organize the event, some original car club members signed on to help and thereby provide for some continuity in the 14th year.

"We jumped in to help organize the show this year with some of the car club members of the community, and want to try to keep it as similar as it was to last year and just continue to grow the event," Anderson said.

Registration for the car show will take place Friday, Aug. 8 from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Sacajawea Park parking lot with a Poker Run at Les Schwab in Polson from 2 to 5 p.m.

A poker run usually consists of cars going from business to business to draw a card until they have six cards total and pick the five best for a poker hand.

But instead, those involved in the car show will be given a hand of cards and whoever wins will receive prizes like key rings, coats, and a set of Les Schwab tires.

Following this will be the line up for the car cruise, which will start at 5 p.m. at the Polson softball fields at 7th Ave west. The cruise runs from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., and all cars will be staged together, go up Kerr Dam Road to Grenier Drive, drive down past the hospital and the assisted living center, go up Skyline Drive and around the Mission View Loop before coming back down SkyLine Drive and First Street. The cars will take Seventh and cross over to Main Street where it will end.

The parade will follow at 6:30 p.m. and afterwards the cars will caravan to Finley Point Grill where the band Dark Horse will be playing and there will be food and drink specials.

Saturday, Aug. 9, the static car show will take place featuring trucks, motorcycles, tractors, etc. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and goes until 11 a.m. on the corner of Seventh and Main Street at Valley Glass. Sections of downtown will be closed off for cars involved in the show, and parking for participants is first come, first served.

The show and shine will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and judges will be walking around to determine their picks. A poker walk will also take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where owners of cars will stroll around downtown businesses to pick up cards for the best poker hand. Various prizes will be disbursed throughout the event, and 50/50 raffle tickets will be sold all day Friday and Saturday.

At 2:30 p.m., all owners must return to their vehicles so judges can get the name, make and model of the winning cars. At 3 p.m. the awards ceremony will start for categories of cars, which will be staged based on winners at Main Street and Fourth Avenue.

Included in the entire Summerfest weekend, the Lake County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit will have a K-9 narcotics demonstration Saturday at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. in the Murdoch's parking lot. Polson Murdoch's has donated an Igloo doghouse and bed to be raffled off at 4 p.m. All proceeds go to help Sole, the K-9 dog, get a bullet and stab-proof vest.

The Sandpiper Art Festival in the Park will also take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the courthouse lawn on Fourth Avenue and First Street, sponsored by the Sandpiper Gallery.

Gull Boats of Kalispell will bring boats and personal watercraft to the event, which will be on display at Riverside Park both Friday and Saturday. There will be water-show events and food vendors.

At 7 p.m., there will be a free Bop-a-Dips concert at Riverside Park. Throughout the event, there will be opportunities for businesses and organizations to get involved and showcase their cause.

Part of the proceeds from Summerfest will go to the Polson Chamber of Commerce. For more information regarding Summerfest, call 1-800-750-5377 or visit andersonbroadcasting.com.
