Editor,

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Family Matters would like us to remember what precious gifts we have with our children. Look at their unique qualities, and praise them more than reprimand them.

“Realizing a healthy community by nurturing families” is the mission statement of Family Matters. In this we all must take responsibility to care and nurture happy, healthy and safe children.

Polson Family Matters is our community Resource Center where we offer many opportunities for children and their families. Little Cherries, Roll and Tumble, Rhythm and Rhyme, Messy Play, Mix and Measure and Out and About playgroup, are interactive literacy based parent/child playgroups for parents and their toddler/preschool children.

In the Parents As Teachers program, you, as a parent, are your child’s first and most influential teacher. Certified Parent Educators come to your home and show you how to be just that. PAT Educators teach you about your child’s development and windows of opportunity from birth to 3 years and what you can do to help your child reach his or her full potential. Appointments are made individually and at your convenience.

In the mentoring program, in cooperation with the afterschool program, high school students share their time and skills with elementary age students in third and fourth grade.

In the Resource Lending Library, books, videos and brochures on parenting are available for use or checkout. Also available are children’s books, videos and games.

To register for programs or for more information, please call 249-0457 or 212-2709.

Family Matters is funded by the Montana Children’s Trust Fund, the Mattel Foundation, the Lego Foundation, the Polson Community Foundation and the Gilhousen Family Foundation. All programs are free unless specified.

Remember, the way you communicate with your children will reflect on how they feel about themselves. Unkind words and behaviors may last a lifetime. Generations of verbal abuse seep into our parenting patterns.

Work harder to see small actions and acknowledge them; be a patient listener. This lets them know you do care. Don’t be too busy to spend time with your children. Our children are our future; let’s take good care of them.
