CHARLO – Students in the Charlo School District posted test score passing rates that skyrocketed past levels of other schools across the state and Mission Valley, Superintendent Thom Peck told school board members last week.

He attributed success on the state-administered science College Readiness Test to hardworking staff and students. The test was given to all fourth, eighth and 10th grade students. Math and reading scores were not available last year, as Montana field tested new exams structured to test Common Core curriculum.

The district as a whole had an 84 percent passing rate, up from 70 percent the previous year. In fourth grade every student had test scores classified as “proficient” or “advanced,” Peck said.

“Statewide, the average for grade four is 68 percent,” Peck said. “In Mission Valley, it’s 61 percent … In every grade level, we were at least 20 points above the state average. Looking at those scores it’s amazing. It is incredible.”

Peck was also pleased with the improvement made by special education students and staff on the tests. In 2013, the district’s passing rate for special education students was 25 percent. In 2014, that number was up to 50 percent passing.

“To me that is a remarkable jump,” Peck said.

School Board Member LaDonna Fryberger was impressed with the results.

“You have to feel pretty good about our kids,” Fryberger said.

Fellow Board Member Tonya Truman said she was happy with the results.

“It’s very good,” Truman said.
