Pizza Cafe holds fundraiser to benefit the Ronan City Library
RONAN — For the second year in a row Pizza Café will hold a fundraiser ever Friday night in May. The Pizza Cafe will donate a portion of their pizza sales to the Friends of the Ronan City Library. You have five Friday nights to enjoy great pizza and support the library at the same time. All monies raised will be used to benefit the Ronan City Library.

Polson Heart and Soul gathers neighbors again
POLSON — 2013 Polson Heart and Soul continues its neighborhood gatherings Thursday, May 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Everyone of all ages is welcome to attend with special emphasis for those living around the Grandview and Woodbine neighborhoods. Good conversations, along with a free dinner, are planned and babysitting services are available. Polson Youth Soccer plans two sign-up dates
POLSON — Polson Youth Soccer Association will be hosting two sign-up events, May 23 and May 30; both from 5-7 p.m. Registration will take place at Kerr Dam Soccer Fields and cost $35, if registered by June 10, or $50 if registered after June 10. Players must be 5 years old by Aug. 1, 2013 to register. Season will run September 15-Oct. 13. Grizzly presentation to be heard at community potluck
BIG ARM — On Friday, May 24, a community potluck will be held at the Big Arm Historic School. Come at 5:30 p.m. to socialize and at 6 p.m. to share in the potluck, then at 7 p.m. to hear the presentation on grizzly bears.
Biologist Amy Macleod, will talk about non-invasive genetic sampling of grizzly bears in northwest Montana. She has worked for over 10 years at the Grizzly Bear Recovery Office with the U.S. Geological Survey. Salish Kootenai College to host meet and greet for candidates
PABLO — The Board of Directors of Salish Kootenai College announce the candidates for the President position, including applicants Carmen Taylor, Robert Depoe III, Steve Dupuis, Gyda Swaney and Sandra Boham.
All candidates are tribal members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and will be interviewed starting Wednesday, May 29.
Following each interview, each candidate will be available for a meet-and-greet session with SKC faculty and staff in the south lobby of the Big Knife building. All those that are interested are invited to meet each applicant. A tour of the SKC campus will follow.

Quilt Guild prepares for annual show
RONAN — The Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will hold their next regular meeting on June 4 at 7 p.m. at the Terrace Lake Community Church in Ronan. We will mainly work on the Quilt Show agenda. Pastured poultry workshop held in Ronan
RONAN—Anne Baier, an organic program specialist with the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT), will be keynote speaker at a workshop on pastured poultry June 5 at the Mission Mountain Food Enterprise Center in Ronan.
The workshops, offered by NCAT, Mission Mountain Food Enterprise Center, and Salish Kootenai College, with support of USDA Risk Management Agency, offers ideas on how to succeed in the increasingly popular pastured poultry market.
The workshop will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and will feature several speakers and a hands-on chicken processing demonstration.

Benefit planned for Debbie Basler
POLSON — A benefit spaghetti feed and silent auction will be held for Debbie Basler at the Polson Elks Lodge on Thursday, June 6, from 5-8 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 for a family and they may be purchased at Port Polson Inn, Total Screen Design or at the door.
Debbie has been diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, which has attacked every part of her body. Due to this debilitating disease, Debbie has been forced to leave her job and is on the verge of losing her home. She has no medical insurance and is finding it hard to qualify for financial assistance.

ST. IGNATIUS — What is a “Can Test” you ask? Well, it’s a great fundraiser for the food pantries in Ronan and St. Ignatius. It is a canned food contest.
Get your family and friends together and start collecting cans of food and then come up with a unique sculpture you can construct on-site with your cans.
Bring your cans to the Mission Valley United Methodist church on June 8 to compete for prizes and have a lot of fun while also providing a needed service for our valley food pantries.
Last year we collected 1,000 cans of food. Let’s see if we can top that this year.

RONAN — The Lake County Spay/Neuter Task Force is sponsoring a low-cost spay/neuter clinic on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, at Glacier View Christian School in Ronan. The clinic is for dog and cat owners that have low to moderate or fixed income. Appointments are required. Youngsters offered free airplane flights
POLSON — The Lake County Chapter 1122 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will host Young Eagles Flights at Polson Airport on Saturday morning, June 8, starting at 9 a.m.
All kids between the ages of eight and 17, with their parent’s approval, can get a ride in an airplane free of charge.
A breakfast of pancakes, ham and eggs will be available from 8-11 a.m. All activities are on a “weather permitting” basis.

Citizens invited to discuss possible ice rink
POLSON — Are you interested in ice hockey, figure skating, curling, roller-skating, or roller derby? If so, you are invited to attend an organizational meeting to discuss the viability of an outdoor refrigerated ice rink to serve all of Lake County and the Flathead Indian Reservation. Flathead Basin Commission Meeting
POLSON — Members of the Flathead Basin Commission (FBC) will hold a meeting on Wednesday, June 12, at the Flathead Lake Biological Station, Polson.
The morning session, from 9-10 a.m., will focus on FBC business, administration and updates on programmatic work. The afternoon session will focus strategic and long range planning.
The FBC was established by the Montana Legislature in 1983 to “monitor and protect” the water quality of the Flathead River drainage system. All FBC meetings are open to the public.

Pachyderm Club to hear about Flathead Lake
POLSON — Heidi Sedivy, Education Director for Flathead Lakers, will provide an overview of Flathead Lakers activities and will discuss their assessment of the current status of the lake when she speaks at the Friday, June 14 meeting of the Lake County Pachyderm Club.
Greg McCormick, president of the Flathead Lakers will also attend the meeting and will be available to answer questions.
The meeting will be held at the Polson Rural Fire Department building on Regatta Road west of Polson. It begins with a social time at 11:30 a.m. followed by the business meeting at noon. The meeting adjourns at 1 p.m.

Port Polson Players present two one-act comedies
POLSON — The Port Polson Players, in association with the Mission Valley Friends of the Arts, present Mark Twain’s “The Diary of Adam and Eve” with companion piece “When God Comes to Breakfast Your Don’t Burn the Toast.” To kick off the Players 38th summer theatre season, these two, one-act comedies, will feature $10 tickets. Ages 17 and 15, Rachael and Josiah are the children of Jim and Shirley Pettit, who play as a family for dances throughout the valley as The Little Big Band. Environmental issues presented at democrats’ meeting
POLSON — Daerf Johnson, staff member for the Environmental Information Center, will present an overview of several major environmental issues currently facing Montana citizens, including the Keystone Pipeline, Otter Creek coal development (which has the potential of becoming the largest coal mine in the United States), and the expansion of other mining operations in Southeast Montana. His presentation, followed by a question and answer period, is being sponsored by the Lake County Democrats and will be held in conjunction with the monthly meeting at the Polson Senior Citizens Center, 504 Third Ave., Wednesday, June 19, from 7-9 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Historical Society to meet
POLSON — The public is invited to join and attend the 10 a.m. meeting of the Flathead Reservation Area Historical Society on Thursday, June 20. The meeting will be held at the Lake County Courthouse’s large conference room. Payment of $25 membership fees will allow voting at this meeting. Polson Heart and Soul gathers neighbors again
POLSON — Polson Heart and Soul continues its neighborhood gatherings Thursday, June 20, from 6-8:30 p.m. People of all ages are welcome to attend, with special emphasis for those living around the Turtle Lake neighborhood. Fun, good conversation and a free dinner are planned and babysitting services are available.

Second volume of Lake County School history to be presented
POLSON — The long-awaited book, “Lake County School History Volume II,” subtitled, “Once in Flathead County: Many Districts Become One,” will be presented on the third floor of the Lake County Courthouse in the large conference room on June 20, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Author Joyce Decker Wegner, several co-authors, including Glenn Timm, will be on-hand. The general public may purchase books at this time and enjoy a cup of coffee and cookies.
The 608 pages book has hundreds of pictures and stories and sells for $29.95. Pre-paid orders may be picked up. Volume I, “Once in Missoula County: One Large District Becomes Many,” will also be available for purchase.

Firefighter hamburger fry planned for June 22
BIG ARM — Firefighters will be manning a hamburger barbecue on June 22 at the Big Arm Fire Station.
The hamburger fry runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and is put on by the Polson City and Rural Fire Departments at the Big Arm Station. The public is invited to visit with local firefighters and check out all of the equipment used to keep local residents safe.
The fire engine, the fire tender and the brush truck, along with tools and equipment, will be on display for folks to sit in, learn about and enjoy. The firefighters promise to blast water out of the hoses and may even have some hose races (blasting beach balls with water), depending on the weather.
The barbecue is free, but donations to the department are always welcome.
Firemen serve up picnic, auction, raffle
ST. IGNATIUS — Join the St. Ignatius Volunteer Fire Department’s 19th annual “Fireman’s Picnic” on June 22 at the Old Town Field (across from Cenex). Honor Guard plans ribeye dinner, silent auction
POLSON — The Veterans’ Honor Guard will hold a fundraising dinner and silent auction on Saturday, June 22, at the Elks Lodge (B.P.O.E) in Polson.
