‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

RONAN — Ronan cleanup days begin on Wednesday, April 24. Meet at the Ronan High School football field where bags and gloves will be supplied for clean-up from 3:45-6 p.m. Ronan students will be pitching in. There will be a dumpster available from April 24-28 to put any collected trash into.

Do you have a large item or multiple items you need to dispose of but can’t get to the dumpster in town? Do you live within Ronan City Limits? If yes is your answer to both these questions, then we can help. Call Ronan Town Hall at 406-676-4231 to schedule a pick up. Please note, this is to assist with loading item(s) and not a clean-up crew to rake or pick up trash. Our volunteers are happy to help load what you need to get rid of but it must be accessible and ready to go. Please bag small items if possible. Pick up dates are between April 24-28. Lake County Sheriff and Ronan Police Department will be on hand for safety and traffic control.

Make a shawl at the People’s Center

We have sewing machines for your use and will provide instruction for a fee of $15 per person to cover instructor costs. You will need material, ribbon, thread, appliques, heat and bond and anything else you want to adorn your shawl with. You can purchase rolls of fringe in our gift shop. POLSON — The 29th annual Cowboy Ball takes place on Friday, April 26, under the big tent at the Polson Fairgrounds. Pachyderms plan community discussion

POLSON — Polson Pachyderms will host a community discussion from a video by Mr. Reagan called “The Brains Behind Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” It explains the ultimate goals of Alexandria’s campaign manager based on professed philosophy, which combines Nazism and Communism with threats of violence. In order for American communities to combat resurgence of historically dangerous political philosophies we have to become aware of the power behind Marxism and its growing threat in American civil and political life. POLSON — The North Lake County Public Library, 2 First Ave. E, will host the Montana Conversations program “Montana UFOs and Extraterrestrials” with Joan Bird on Friday, April 26, at 5:30. The presentation is free and open to the public. Montana is home to some of the most significant, well-documented, and interesting UFO reports in the history of ufology. Bird gives a short course in UFO literacy, using Montana events to illustrate different aspects of the phenomenon. Montana seems to be a place where there is a lot of historical UFO activity. Join mussel walk, shoreline cleanup

POLSON — Join the CSKT Mussel Walk with local middle school students and community members and help us protect our water from aquatic invasive species on May 3 at Salish Point from 9-11 a.m. Rotate between four interactive information stations: mussel identification, a mussel-dog demonstration, aquatic invasive species life cycle questions and answers, and a mussel walk/shoreline cleanup. ST. IGNATIUS — Fort Connah’s annual “Spring Rendezvous” takes place on the weekend of May 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The open house is free to public and kid friendly. Bring the whole family and enjoy two days of learning history, live demonstrations, activities and the trading post. There will be atlatl, a long bow archery, wool processing, fry-bread, a chuckwagon, and a black powder shoot. Fort Connah is located 6 miles north of St. Ignatius on Highway 93 mile at marker 39. It was the first building in Montana and was part of the Hudson Bay trading post at one time.

Annual Steak Ride begins in Dayton

DAYTON — Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen will have their 38th annual Steak Ride on Sunday, May 5, at the Mueli Ranch. Ride gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 11 a.m. sharp. The ride averages three hours; you set your own pace. We will have a new ride route this year. Steaks will be served from 3-3:30 p.m. only. Bring your gear as we ride rain or shine. Horse shoes are recommended. Saturday night campers are welcome but there are no electric fences allowed and weed-seed-free hay only. The potluck Saturday night begins at 6 p.m. A continental breakfast takes place Sunday morning. There will be 50/50 tickets and door prizes and there are only 150 tickets available so reserve your spot early as last year we sold out. Northwest Accordion Association holds dance

View movie about life at Whiskey Trail Ranch

RONAN — The movie, “A Montana Legacy: The Melton Buffalo Ranch 1948-1962,” will be shown on Thursday, May 9, at the Ronan Senior Citizen’s Center, 528 Main SW, following the evening dinner. Dinner is served at 5 p.m. for a cost of $5. The screening is free.

With archival 8-mm silent film and interviews with the three surviving children of Ike and Villa Melton, as well as three cowboys who participated, the film paints a vivid picture of the family and life at the Whiskey Trail Ranch. The three surviving children, Nora Jean Malinak, LaRue Melton, Terry Melton, as well as Larry Christensen, Bud (Stan) Harris, Marlene Melton, Gary Abbey and Laurence Walchuck, reveal details of building corrals, sure footed horses, trucking buffalo and Villa’s National Bison Range experience.

The film was produced by Caribou Crossing, a local media partnership, and co-directed by Frank Tyro and Larry (Joe) Darlington. DVDs of the 56-minute program will be available at the screenings.

We are in our third year of operation and we run a year-round, free, after-school program for girls in fourth to eighth grade. Our most important event is coming up in May. It’s the NW Regional App Challenge on May 11 and 12, at Flathead Valley Community College, Kalispell. This is a free, two-day event for girls in fourth to eighth grade, from all over our region. Consider Rotary meeting for good conversation

POLSON —The Polson Rotary Club will have its monthly open-social hour at the Perfect Shot on Main Street on Tuesday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. Anyone interested in Rotary or good conversation is welcome. Rotary’s regular weekly meeting is on Tuesday, at 12:15 p.m., usually at the KwaTaqNuk Resort. The club is considering sponsoring a satellite club that would meet in the mornings or evenings, at least twice a month. A minimum of eight members is needed to meet requirements of Rotary International. Ronan is also being considered as a possibility for a satellite location. Music is by Ken’s Country Combo, playing a variety of country and vintage rock and roll. Ken Kenmille is on guitar and a vocalist; Richard Tobel plays lead guitar; Liz Steele is on accordion; and our southern singer is Betty Carter. Coffee and water is provided in the ballroom.
