‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

An East Valley Pottery tour is planned for Saturday, May 20 from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 21 from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The first inaugural East Valley Pottery Tour is a free, self-guided driving tour of some of the Flathead’s most exciting and innovative pottery studios. Each of the studios is nestled along the beautiful East Valley corridor and will take visitors from Bigfork to West Glacier. This free event includes (5) open studio tours, pottery sales, visiting artisans at each location, a poker run with prizes (provided by participating studios) and a post-tour party at Glacier Distilling Company in Coram. RONAN — Ronan High School will hold “Spring Fling Back to the Future,” where Doc and Marty guide you through 100 years of music performed by RHS Band, Choir and Drama at the Performing Arts Center on May 22 and May 23 at 7 p.m. These programs are fundraisers for the Performing Arts Programs. Performance tickets cost $5 per person or $20 for a family. The Technology Student Association and Future Health Professionals will host dinner both nights from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday’s dinner will be hamburgers, beans, chips and a drink. Tuesday’s dinner will be chicken kabobs, rice and a drink. The costs for dinner is $6 per person, $20 for a family of four (additional plates are $5.) All funds on dinner sales will be used for travel to competitions at the state and national levels.

Free Internet Safety Class offered at library

POLSON — North Lake County Public Library will host a free Internet Safety class on Tuesday, May 23, at 2 p.m. in the library meeting room. Library Specialist Heather Miles will present an overview of Internet security and how to stay safe online. Attendees are welcome to bring their own laptops or tablets to follow along. Library laptops will also be available for attendees who don’t have a device. Anyone of any age or skill level is invited to attend. Registration is required.

RONAN — Come to a Lake County Democratic Fundraiser and Rally for Rob Quist on Wednesday, May 24, at 5:30 p.m. This event will be held the night before the Special Election to replace Ryan Zinke. Let spring inspire your coloring

POLSON — Spring Is Bustin’ Out All Over and an adult coloring program hosted by North Lake County Public Library will take place in the library meeting room on Wednesday, May 24. Two 90-minute sessions are offered at 2:30 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. Piano instrumental music is on tap for the afternoon session and the Mission Valley Choral Society Small Ensemble will appear for a set of vocal selections in the evening. Pioneer Museum opens in Polson

POLSON — The Polson Flathead Historical Museum, “The Pioneer Museum on Main Street” invites you to view amazing exhibits of daily life in the Mission Valley and Flathead Lake area in the late 1800s and early 1900s, such as the stagecoach, chuck wagon, fire trucks, Calamity Jane’s saddle and Flathead Lake’s ‘Nessie” (some say it was, some say it wasn’t, caught here) and much more. We open for the season on Memorial Day each year, and go until Friday, Sept. 15. The museum is located at 708 Main Street and operates Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (Closed on Sundays) There is a visitor fee of $10 and children under 10 years old are admitted free with a paying adult. Garden of the Rockies Museum opens

RONAN — The Garden of the Rockies Museum, located at 400 Round Butte Road, will open on Thursday, June 1. The museum features the Round Butte Gym, the fire escape from the old Ronan School, Sloan’s Flat Stage Stop, a one-room schoolhouse, an old log home with dovetailed construction, and a tool shed and a farm machinery building. Join rock skipping contest

POLSON — The 2017 Flathead Lake Rock Skipping Championship will crown a new record holder on Saturday, June 3, at the Riverside Park Dock in Polson. The event showcases finesse, touch and fun. Bring Your Own Rocks (B.Y.O.R.) to this exciting event and bound on down to Polson for skipping and laughs. Registration begins Saturday, June 3, at 9 a.m. at the Cove Deli and Pizza. Registration costs $10 each or $40 for the whole family. There are two categories per gender: 12 and under, and 13 and up. The contest begins at 10 a.m. and finishes around at 11 a.m. when awards are given and the state record is bestowed. Then it’s up to the Cove Deli and Pizza where all participants receive free pizza. Fundraiser event held

POLSON — Lake County Search and Rescue will hold a fundraising event with an ATV, UTV, and Dirt Bike Poker Run on Saturday, June 10. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Buffalo Bridge and ends at Sloan Bridge. After the event there will be a barbecue dinner back at Buffalo Bridge. Pre-registration will take place Friday, June 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the VFW in Polson. Late registration starts at 8 a.m. June 10. Registration fees are $35 for the first poker hand and a T-shirt; $10 for additional hands. Additional T-shirts will be available to purchase: $15 for children and $18 for adults. Cherry Valley serves breakfast, lunch

POLSON — Monday, June 12, is the first day of the free breakfast and lunch Summer Food Service Program in Polson. Cherry Valley, 107 Eighth Ave. W, is the site for the program. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m.-1:15 p.m., Monday-Friday. All children 18 years old and under eat for free. Lunches are available for adults for a fee. Fitness for kids’ program starts

PABLO — Salish Kootenai College's “Making Fitness Fun Program” (open to youth 7 years and older) begins Monday, June 12 and goes from 8:30 a.m.-noon, Monday through Thursday, until Aug. 17. The program will be held at the Salish Kootenai College Joe McDonald Gymnasium. Physical activities will be provided in-between breakfast and lunch. Activities include: swimming, kickball, football, basketball, dodge ball, Native games, volleyball, soccer, shinny, bike riding and gardening. Activities are intended to keep kids busy and active during the summer months. Transportation is provided Monday through Thursday to Ronan and Polson Boys and Girls Clubs daily at about noon. Seniors compete in Senior Olympic Games

MISSION VALLEY — The 32nd Annual Montana Senior Olympic Games will be held in the Pablo, Polson, Ronan areas on June 15-17, 2017. This involves competition in 14 different sports for men and women who are 50 years of age and older. The sports include: archery, bowling, badminton, cycling, basketball, golf, horseshoes, pickle ball, race-walk, tennis, table tennis, road race, swimming and track & field. POLSON — Kids can “Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love” at Vacation Bible Camp at the Polson United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to noon, June 19-23. The camp’s theme, “Surf Shack,” will use the analogy of waves to help campers experience God’s love. Activities will include music, puppets, story-time, games, science, crafts and mission. A light snack will be served. Camp will end with a Friday Celebration Day picnic provided for the campers and their families from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Registration for kids, entering kindergarten-12 years of age is now open.
