POLSON — “Antarctic Freshwater Lakes in the World’s Coldest Desert” by Shawn Devlin will be the next educational program of the Mission Mountain Audubon Society on Tuesday, June 26, at 7 p.m. in the Polson library meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Shawn will introduce us to the vibrant benthic oasis of freshwater lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica. The coldest desert in the world doesn’t sound like a place you might go to study lakes, but that is exactly the place to find some of the most amazing benthic algae in the world. Dr. Shawn Devlin is an Assistant Research Professor with the University of Montana at the Flathead Lake Biological Station.

ARLEE — The 120th annual Arlee Powwow celebration begins Monday, July 2, and ends Sunday, July 8. All events are open to the public and free of charge. Arts, crafts, stick games, dance competitions, Indian and other ethnic foods will be available. Absolutely no alcohol, firearms, unleashed dogs or motorcycles are allowed in the camp area. This year’s dance competition will expand to 31 categories. There will be separate style categories for adults age 40-59. ARLEE — Two photo exhibits will be center stage at the opening of the Arlee Jocko Valley Museum on July 4th. Troy Felsman’s photo exhibit with biographical notes of Salish Pend d’Oreille ancestors of the Jocko will be on display. The second exhibit will honor the Jocko Valley inductees into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center. Additionally, there will be a photo montage of Arlee Warriors’ boys basketball back to back state championship team.

The historic church/museum building houses a continuous photo and artifacts display of veteran memorials, homesteaders, and Native Americans. ARLEE — “Salute to America” is the parade theme for the 65th annual Arlee Fourth of July Parade. Registration will be at Arlee High School entryway, with parade line up beginning in the parking lot. The parade begins at high noon, traveling south on Fyant Street turning West onto Bouch before turning north and returning to the high school via Morigeau street. The parade will not be traveling on Highway 93 due to highway department restrictions. Parade categories consist of: patriotic, clubs and organizations, commercial, western, Indian, vehicle, business, novelty and humorous.
