‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

LAKE COUNTY — The Flathead Reservation and Lake County Boys and Girls Club in Ronan will operate a summer program Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. from June 10-Aug. 16 (closed July 4). The cost is $20 per week or $150 for the full summer. The summer session is 10 weeks of fun – opportunities for discovery, learning, and activities galore. Arlee Powwow July 3 through 7

ARLEE — The 121st annual Arlee Celebration Powwow begins Wednesday, July 3, and ends Sunday, July 7. The Arlee Powwow Esyapqeyni is the premier annual celebration of the Salish and Pend d’Oreille tribes, sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Nation. Please join us for traditional dance competitions, singing and drumming and a big July 4 parade. There are also many vendors with handmade beaded crafts and food booths, which include a variety of Indian tacos for sale. All events are open to the public and free of charge. Arts, crafts, stick games, dance competitions, Indian and other ethnic foods will be available. Absolutely no alcohol, firearms, unleashed dogs or motorcycles are allowed in the camp area.

CHARLO — Ninepipes Museum is honored that artists will exhibit their beautiful work in the Earl W. Wharton Memorial Gallery during the following “First Saturday” events of the 2019 season: July events at the Ninepipes Museum include the event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on July 6 featuring the beautiful turquoise and silver jewelry by Joshua Marceau, and two book signings. Ron Mills, a long-time Bob Marshall Wilderness outfitter, will sign his book, "Under the Biggest Sky of All," and at 1 p.m. Sheron Green will read from her book, "Secret Worlds, A True Story of Deception, Illusion and Intrigue." Battle in the Bay begins

BIGFORK — Mission Valley 3 on 3’s annual Battle in the Bay will be held Saturday, July 6, at Bigfork High School and hosts 100 plus teams from third grade through adult. There will be 6-foot, 8-foot, and 9-foot dunk contests, 3-point contests and free throw contests held on Leonard Park Logging Inc. - center court.

Country jam to replace accordion jam

POLSON — We will be starting a new classic country jam at the Elks, effective Sunday, July 7, that will go from 2-5 p.m. This will take the time-slot of the Northwest Accordion Association Jam, (recently disbanded), who played on the first Sunday of each month. We are trying to continue providing the community a place to jam to classic country music, dance, listen and socialize with family and friends for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. All are welcome. RONAN — The 2019 Native Youth Tech Camp will be held at the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation in Ronan from July 8-12. Registration is open to Native high school students (entering freshmen to graduating seniors) at tech4good.skc.edu. This camp is offered at no cost. Breakfast and lunch are provided daily and transportation is available for Flathead Reservation communities.

LAKESIDE — Flathead Lake Boat Tours in Lakeside will graciously host an afternoon cruise aboard the Far West to one of the Flathead Lake Biological Station’s lake monitoring sites. Join FLBS researchers for appetizers, beverages, music and an overview of Flathead Lake ecology and the FLBS Research and Monitoring program. Youth program teaches about great outdoors

BIGFORK — Flathead Fledglings – This one hour program from 11 a.m. – noon, designed for children ages 4-7, gives kids a chance to get outside and learn about the great outdoors. This is the third in a five-part series, although participants need not attend all five. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. This event takes place at Wayfarers Harry Horn picnic shelter. The fee is $4 per child.

Kiwanis Club holds ‘Night at the Museum’

Learn star stories, star art at library

POLSON — “Star Stories and Native Skywatchers,” is a program that will be hosted by the North Lake County Public Library on Thursday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m. Amy Williams, many-talented teacher and Indian education coordinator for the Polson School District, will lead us in learning some new and old ways of understanding the cosmos. There will be star stories and star art from Native Skywalkers, an organization that celebrates Indigenous and interdisciplinary STEAM programming.
