‘Foxfire’ comedy, drama plays at theatre on the lake
POLSON — The second production by the Port Polson Players is “Foxfire,” a Hallmark Hall of Fame classic. Annie Nations and her husband Hector loved their life together in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but when Hector dies, Annie has to decide if she can handle the wilderness on her own. When son Dillard, a rising country music singing star returns, he must decide the fate of the farm. Montana Governor’s Awards for the Arts recipients and Players’ producers Neal and Karen Lewing are featured. All summer theatre shows are presented at Polson’s beautiful theatre on the lake on the Polson golf course (Highway 93, Boettcher Park. New art exhibit begins at Sandpiper Gallery
POLSON — The Sandpiper Art and Gift Gallery, 306 Main Street, begins their new exhibit, “Where does the Story Begin?” The show runs from July 30-Aug. 31 and features member artists Carole Carberry (watercolor), Maryann Eikens (sculpture/watercolor), Gitti Miller (basket weaving) Jan Brooks (wearable art), Jan Lindgren (watercolor), Julie Christopher (everything and anything), and guest artist John Ashley (photography). Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday.
Arlee Library begins summer program through August 7
ARLEE — The Arlee Summer Reading Program is free for all ages and runs from June 12-Aug. 7. Boys and Girls Club summer program June 11 through August 17
LAKE COUNTY — The Flathead Reservation and Lake County Boys and Girls Club will operate a summer program at both their Polson and Ronan sites Monday-Friday (not July 4) from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. from June 11-Aug. 17. The cost is $25 per month and must be paid up front in addition to membership fee. Space is limited. Share the Spirit director to speak
POLSON - The Polson Kiwanis Club hold lunch meetings the first and third Thursday of each month downstairs in the KwaTaqNuk Resort, Koostatah room, from noon-1 p.m. Toni Young, Share the Spirit’s director, will speak about the local organization’s efforts since 1998 to make sure Lake County children have the best Christmas possible. Share the Spirit has been in partnership with the United States Marines and Toys for Tots for the past 15 years, and also with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, which raises money for a shopping excursion at Wal-Mart. Flathead Lake Biological Station hosts open house
YELLOW BAY – The Flathead Lake Biological Station’s annual open house will be held Friday, Aug. 3 from 1-5 p.m. The open house provides an opportunity for the public to learn more about the ecology of Flathead Lake and its watershed, as well as FLBS and its research around the globe. The open house allows FLBS scientists to showcase the breadth of their activities, as well as show examples of how ecological research at FLBS benefits Flathead Lake and visitors and residents. Activities this year include: tours of biological station facilities, boat trips on our 30-foot research vessel “the Jessie B,” exhibits on recent Flathead research, including Flathead Lake ecology, presentations by FLBS research scientists and invited speakers and a visit by UM mascot Monte. Fun, entertainment scheduled for Pioneer Days
RONAN –– The Pioneer Days celebration begins in Ronan on Friday, Aug. 3, and will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday Aug. 3-5. Ronan Pioneer Days is a community event with fun for the whole family. There will be plenty of good old-fashioned entertainment. Flower artwork exhibited at Ninepipes Museum
CHARLO — Ninepipes Museum is honored that artists will exhibit their beautiful work in the Earl W. Wharton Memorial Gallery during the 2018 season. Nancy Vaughan’s terrific fry bread and Indian tacos will be available in conjunction with the artist receptions for the next two months — August and September. Nancy Miller, a Montana native, will exhibit her work on Saturday, Aug. 4. Miller paints different mediums and different subjects, but her favorite is flowers. Nancy has been a member of the Sandpiper Gallery for several years. Painting for her is a genuine pleasure and blessing.
Fundraiser to fund adults-with-disabilities facility
RONAN — On Aug. 4, during Pioneer Days, from 8 a.m.–4 p.m., a fundraiser will be held at the Terrace Lake Community Church, 35663 Terrace Lake Road. The event will include a silent auction, a yard sale and food. Your help will help provide funding for a feasibility plan to turn a local church in Ronan into a proactive assisted living facility for adults with disabilities and more.

Pancakes, softball, rodeo planned for Pioneer Days
RONAN — Pioneer Days’ second day begins with a pancake breakfast at the VFW, followed by a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at 8 a.m. at the Ronan High School parking lot, and a co-ed softball tournament at 9 a.m. There will be a car show at 10 a.m. and a Kiddie Slicker Rodeo at noon. The open rodeo and Ring of Fire begins at 7:30 p.m. with scholarships again being given (must be present to win). Another street dance is planned for 9 p.m.

Horsemen host speaker to discuss equine therapy
RONAN — On Tuesday, Aug. 7, Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen will hold their monthly meeting at the VFW in Ronan at 7:30 p.m. We are very excited to have Shaunda Albert of Ronan do a program on equine therapy. Equine therapy and retreats include children in foster care and people with addiction issues, and veterans. Flathead Audubon goes to bat site
POLSON — Join Flathead Audubon on Friday, Aug. 10, from 8:30-11 p.m. for a cooperative field trip with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to go to a site with known bat activity. Electronic equipment will be used to detect the ultrasonic calls of bats flying overhead and mist nets will be used to capture bats for closer inspection. Wildlife biologists Lewis Young, Lisa Bate and Chris Hammond will demonstrate the equipment, handle bats captured in the mist nets and talk about the amazing adaptations bats have for navigating, catching food and hibernating. Participants will not be allowed to touch or handle the bats. Head lamps or flashlights are necessary and come with suitable clothing for the evening temperatures. Register early for Poker Paddle event
BIGFORK — On Aug. 12, human-propelled watercraft will start from the Bigfork community dock and paddle a short, middle, or extended distance (5-plus miles) course to designated stops in the beautiful northeastern part of Flathead Lake, collecting one playing card at each location. Prizes are awarded for both the top poker hands and the worst poker hands. Each player receives a commemorative gift. There will be a picnic after-party with live music at Brookside Yard provided by the Flathead Lake Brewing Company. There will also be a silent auction. Participation is limited to the first 150 paddle craft.
