School celebrates reading with assembly, bike giveaway

ST. IGNATIUS — Four lucky St. Ignatius Elementary students took brand new bicycles home from school Friday. Michael Kibler, Azia LaFrombois, Alexis LaChance and Danny Helmer each won a coveted drawing for a new bike through the Books for Bikes program. Every time a student reads a book, he can enter the drawing — the more books read, the more chances to win.  “It’s very motivating,” Title I instructor Susan Batiuchok said. “Even today, kids were reading their hearts out (for another chance to win).” The Montana Masonic Foundation donated two bikes, while the Indian Education Committee added two more. Wal-Mart co-sponsored the giveaways...

POLSON — “Bubble gum, bubble gum in the dish, How many pieces do you wish?” That is second-grader Cali Cannon’s favorite jump rope rhyme.  As many times as Cali can jump equaled the number of pieces of (pretend) bubble gum. Cali and her two classmates counted the jumps. ...

The drunk driver, dazed but unharme...

ARLEE — It’s almost time for the first run of the spring in Arlee, and there are more than a few good reasons to participate, no matter your stance on exercise. Spell bound

After seven rounds, only two spellers remained under the lights in the Ronan Performing Arts Center last Thursday night.  Charlo eighth-grader Timber Munson had just been eliminated when she misspelled “tragic,” and victory was close for Polson eighth-grader Cody Baer and Ronan seventh-gr...

Math counts for Ronan Middle School math team

RONAN — Nine middle school mathematicians sit in a classroom during their lunch break, calculating. Their instructor, Shawn Harris, throws another problem on the screen from her computer, which incites a flurry of activity and scribbling on white boards until one student blurts out an answer. Another d...
