Turkey Trotters brave cold, snowpacked course

Thanksgiving Day was cold, but 73 runners and walkers showed up for the third annual 5-K Turkey Trot at 9:30 a.m. to work off their Thanksgiving meal before they even ate. Teenagers Jimmy Bjorge and Alex Nystrom finished first and tied at 18 minutes and 52 seconds.  Polson Running, who sponsors the trot, donated the $503 proceeds to Polson Loaves and Fish Food Pantry. Since Town Pump is matching donations to the food pantry in November, Loaves and Fish will receive an extra $500. Tyana Smith from Polson Running thanked Dennis Duty and Mission Bay residents for allowing the Turkey Trotters to run and walk through their community on a new course this year. Smith also thanked Total ...

Unpleasant pheasant forecast for 2010 season

It looks like six weeks of rain washed out any prospects of a good pheasant hunting season in the valley.  It appeared that the local pheasant population was on the rise last year after a mild-weather hatching season.  Even with a warm and dry hatching season last year it was going to take so...

Fall Mack Days begins Oct. 1

If anyone ever needed any extra incentive to go out to the lake on a beautiful fall day in search of a trophy lake trout, the Confederated Salish and Tribe have given them one. The prize money in the 2010 Mack Days has doubled from 2009. The CSKT will be giving out $100,000 in cash and prizes in the 2010 ...

Mild winter boosts big game population

The elk and deer numbers appear to be on the rise in the upper northwest corner of the state, while the elk population in the Bitterroot, Clark Fork and Blackfoot drainages remain extremely low, according to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spring surveys. Region 1 After a mild winter the whitetail...

Plein Air painters pick Polson

POLSON — About 15 local artists signed up for the Plein Air Paintout on Sept. 11, which turned out to be sunny. The group gathered at Riverside Park at 9 a.m. but then scattered, with some going to the Travis Dolphin Dog Park, one man going to the Polson Fly-In and four artists remaining at Riverside P...

Naethe claims Mack Days title

Pablo teenage angler Stephen Naethe won his third Mack Days title in a row, but just barely. Entering the final weekend of the 11-week event, Naethe had already had his third title dating back to the 2009 fall event sewn up, but had to wait and see if anybody could tie him. Columbia Falls angler Steven...

Benson edges closer to Naethe for Mack Days’ title

After the penultimate weekend of the 2010 Spring Mack Days, Columbia Falls’ Steven Benson still has a chance to catch Stephen Naethe for the top angler, but he will need to be perfect in the final weekend. Benson caught 50 of the 1,321 lake trout turned in Friday and was one of three anglers to reac...

Mom nets monster during 9th weekend of Mack Days

Mother’s Day is a day that you’re supposed to put the fishing pole and tackle away and spoil mom for a day – unless your mom is Nicole Peters. Peters, the top lady angler in the 2009 Fall Mack Days and leading women in the spring event, caught a 45-inch, 38.4-pound lake trout, while fish...
