Let us know about your summer activities

It's been warm and sunny enough that you can almost see the end of winter. Even though it's still three weeks away, we're already preparing for the spring and summer season here at the Valley Journal.  Now is the time that we put together those crucial spring and summer planners that valley residents and visitors alike look forward to as their ready reference. Our Youth Guide is nearing completion and right behind it will be our Summer Guide.  What we'd like to do is compile a complete list of activities throughout the Mission Valley from spring through summer. That list will be published in the calendar section of those two guides. So, if you're involved in organizing an...

Education is a form of patriotism

Editor, As the co-organizer of the April 2009 TEA Party held at Riverside Park I feel that I must respond to a mischaracterization of such TEA Parties put forth in last week’s letter to the editor from Tammy Miller of St. Ignatius. In the letter, Ms. Miller quotes Travis McAdam, executive directo...

Please save Chief Cliff

Editor, I am writing to you today concerning the mining on the base of Chief Cliff Mountain in Elmo. Chief Cliff has been around since the beginning of time, according to the Kootenai creation story, and is a very special and significant sacred site to not just the Kootenai people of Elmo, but to the o...

Let your voice be heard

Editor, I attended the Rural Fire District Trustee meeting held on Feb. 10, and right from the start it was clear that two trustees were in favor of making the new fire station Fairgrounds a fully active station and the other two trustees sided with the fire chief in wanting it be used as a warehouse for ...

Aquatics center has superb vision statement

Editor, On Jan. 9, I sat with six other people in Teggeman's home in our South Hills community listening to an inspiring and professional presentation on the Mission Valley Aquatic Center "Make a Splash, Change a Life," planned by Project Director, Tana Seeley. Without going into the details so thoroug...

Participate and be counted in the census

That knock on the door might not be a man with a big, 6-foot check from the lottery division. But by answering it, you could be helping our state or our valley win a piece of the lottery. The 2010 Census is about to begin and if you're a Flathead Reservation resident, that means you'll be having someone c...

Scouting encourages youth, adults to realize dreams

Editor,  This year the Boy Scouts of America celebrates 100 years of existence. The week of Feb. 7-14 is Scout Week and a time for me to reflect.  I am fortunate to be part of this program for 52 of those years. Therefore I am openly expressing my thanks and appreciation to all the youth and ...

Let us consider peace as an option

Editor, Peace or Fear? That is the question and a non-partisan issue. Is peace an option? What is peace? Is it a concept outside of ourselves that is unreachable or is given to us as a gift? No, I say. Peace is a state of mind for which we have the option to choose every minute of the day. Whether you ...

Speaker to address right-wing extremists

Editor, The Flathead Reservation Human Rights Coalition, Inc. is celebrating our 20th year of offering presentations to the public that highlight the unique and diverse community we are proud to be a part of. We will be sponsoring a potluck and presentation each month. Our first event will be Feb. 24 a...

True spirituality brings peace

Editor, This is in response to the letter placed by Bob McClellan titled "Being spiritual is very different than religious," in the Feb. 4 issue. I also caught part of that documentary on John Muir and noticed the same comment, and it struck me that the man was indeed more spiritual than religious. I'v...
