Trash stains Jocko Valley

Editor, The last couple days we've spent a few hours in our quest to clean the highway in the Jocko Valley. Wow, someone's trash must have flown out of the back of their truck. Only the bag broke and it was blown all over and we picked it up one piece at a time. Let's see, only three diapers thrown out this time — last year it was a full bag of dirty diapers. Who invented retreads, and why are the treads up and down the highway? And are they sharp and pokey. Cut right through the bag I was carrying. Do you suppose the trucks are still running with bald tires? And yes, the diesel smell from those trucks really make the outdoors smell ... bad. Hey, guys, are you running from th...

A lot of students and fans missed a good show

Apparently, there are a lot of people who don't care to watch athletes perform unless they think they're going to win. A mostly empty gym on Saturday morning proved that point to me.  Oh, there were some dedicated parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles in the stands of Glacier High School that mo...

Mining, energy bans not yet binding, permanent

The recent headlines just about said it all: "B.C. Bans Mining and Energy Extraction in the Flathead." This announcement and that of senators Baucus and Tester's to introduce similar legislation, and the subsequent Memorandum of Understanding between B.C. and Montana on the Flathead represent a huge shift in...

Thanks for agreeing to protect the Flathead

Editor, Today (Feb. 18) Premier Campbell and Governor Schweitzer signed a Memorandum of Understanding to protect the transboundary Flathead, one of the most critical habitats in North America. The Agreement will ensure that the Flathead is protected from mining and energy development, thereby enabling pre...

Quarry work benefits the shoreline

Editor, As a non-tribal member I am (I hope) making a respectful reply to Amlu Caye's letter, per the Chief Cliff "mine." This letter is also directed to others of our local tribes members. No disrespect is intended by me for my lack understanding of tribal lore or beliefs. Amlu, having read your lette...

Good luck Ann Brower

Editor, Thank you, Ann Brower, for speaking at our potluck on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Valley View Clubhouse. You were very informative and seem to know your issues very well. Any other clubs out there should have her come and speak at your meetings or potlucks.  Good Luck Ann campaigning for Lake ...

New fire station is not a warehouse

Editor, I feel compelled to respond to the recent discussions regarding the new Polson Rural Fire Station, as there is much misinformation being spread. It has been stated that the new station is a warehouse and not an “active” station, both of which are false. To start with, a few facts ab...

Seat belt use is a simple, basic rule

Every year across the United States, there are more than 40,000 deaths on our highways. While the causes may vary, one fact remains; many could have been saved had they done one simple thing: buckle the seat belt. While buckling up has always been considered a personal choice, drivers need to consider the...

Let us know about your summer activities

It's been warm and sunny enough that you can almost see the end of winter. Even though it's still three weeks away, we're already preparing for the spring and summer season here at the Valley Journal.  Now is the time that we put together those crucial spring and summer planners that valley residents...

Education is a form of patriotism

Editor, As the co-organizer of the April 2009 TEA Party held at Riverside Park I feel that I must respond to a mischaracterization of such TEA Parties put forth in last week’s letter to the editor from Tammy Miller of St. Ignatius. In the letter, Ms. Miller quotes Travis McAdam, executive directo...
