Lady Vikings shut down Superior, cruise past Alberton

ALBERTON — The Lady Vikings were maybe a little too excited to start the season and a less aggressive Lady Viking defense in the second half was the key in a 32-27 season-opening victory against Superior Friday. After watching the Lady Bobcats take their first lead with five seconds left in the first half and going into to the locker room trailing 15-14, the Lady Vikings took control of the game by completely shutting out Superior in the third quarter to take a 27-15 lead into the final quarter. “We quit fouling. That was key for us,” Charlo coach Bret Thompson said. “We didn’t press as much and focused more on half-court rather than full-court. We stayed...

Vikings' D stifles Superior, Alberton

ALBERTON — A different Viking stepped up each night as Charlo started the season by breezing past Superior and Alberton. Chance Rosenbaum dominated the paint and finished with 15 points in the Vikings’ 50-31 season-opening victory over the Bobcats in Charlo Friday and in Alberton Saturday Step...

Deep, athletic Lady Vikes ready to set sail

The Charlo coach will have plenty of options to go to as the Lady Vikings prepare for the upcoming season. Twenty-five girls came out for basketball this year, the most ever in Bret Thompson’s 25-year tenure as the coach. “This is the largest group that we have had since I have been in Char...

One of the guys

Few people get to enjoy true bliss in their life. David McCullough gets to every time he steps on the Charlo football field. The 18-year-old with Down syndrome has been the Viking football manager the past four years and during this span there hasn’t been a bigger Viking fan. “I mean he loo...

Chinook delivers knockout blow to Vikings’ season

CHARLO — It wasn’t supposed to end like this. Everything was falling in place just like the Charlo Vikings had planned. In their final polish practice Friday for their quarterfinal game against the Chinook Sugarbeeters, the Vikings had practiced being down by 12 points and coming back to win w...

Lady Vikings end season with 5-set loss to P-Burg at divisionals

BUTTE — After a quick exit from this year’s Western C Divisional Volleyball Tournament, the Charlo Lady Vikings learned what they’ll need to compete at next year’s tournament – a killer instinct. The Lady Vikings opened the tournament Thursday at the Maroon Activities Center ...

Playoff poise

After surviving a 58-50 shootout with White Sulphur Springs in the first round of the playoffs Saturday, the Vikings huddled in the middle of the field and calmly raised nine fingers to their home crowd. Maybe the stoic manner in which they held up their fingers representing the nine games they have won s...

Lady Vikings sweep through districts to claim first title in 4 years

CHARLO — The Lady Vikings hardly broke a sweat in winning their first district championship since 2006. The tournament host didn’t drop a set Friday or Saturday going 9-0 in their three matches and will enter the Western C Divisional Tournament with a 25-game win streak. Fueled by the hard hit...

Working hard to give Charlo a better Chance

In the Vikings 58-50 wild shootout victory against the White Sulphur Springs Hornets Saturday, it seemed like the outcome hinged on almost every play. So there are at least a dozen plays you could go back to and say that changed the game, but the one that still stands out in my mind was Viking lineman Chance...

Lady Vikings sweep Lincoln

CHARLO — The Charlo Lady Vikings looked good in pink Oct. 20.  Wearing pink uniforms on “Think Pink” night, a night dedicated to raising money for free breast cancer screenings for low-income women, the Lady Vikings swept the Lincoln Lady Lynx and will enter the District 10-C Tourna...
